From what I have seen, the routes they suggest are optimized by mileage, not time. The suggested routes frequently suggest using routes nobody would use who had actually driven them before.

For example, I was routed over White Pass in Washington (or Oregon - I remember the name, forget the State.)

Nobody who has ever taken that route would willingly take it instead of the interstates, unless your final is actually on US12 near the pass. I won't ever again.

I typically average between 2 and 8 percent out of route miles over a given month. I don't get paid for those miles, but I save time using them.

Very few companies pay by actual miles driven. Those that do likely have other tricks to reduce your paycheck, like lower pay per mile, fuel compliance fees, or whatever.

    2nd update:

2738 miles this week. Asset mgr and TM were both made aware that I’m not one to sit still. After more communicating with Asset Mgr we are on a better playing field. I feel like we are working well together. Banged out 646 miles today and many days I can do 600 even with my lil red 65mph truck. There not perfect but who is. I like it.

lot of people in the counties south of Olympia run highway 12 everyday
    lot of otr companies too
    its a state route
there is longer miles to wait in line on highway 18 and interstate 90
traffic avalanche control road closed nuch of the time up north
you might not like the longer highway 14 route either
your company probably dont wanna pay twice as much tax and more miles to route through Oregon either

I'll shut down and wait for weather if other routes are closed. If the weather is bad enough to shut down other routes, White Pass will be a deathtrap.

Have you ever noticed the curve in the road where the entire road tore away from the mountain in an avalanche and the rebuilt road is being held in place by retaining walls?

White Pass is a no-go for me.
