if i recall, a potential new employer, only has to show for the record, they tried to contact? meaning if they cannot reach an employer for a reference, they at least "attempted"?

i have had a few employers go out of business since the late 1970's.....how do they contact those?

Yeah - we called them "Frequent Flyers". Every 10-20 days, a new request from a new company for the same driver. lol.

Companies have to be able to document 3 legitimate attempts to contact that employers over at least 3 days. Then they can go to secondary verification methods like 1st/last paystub or W2 or 1099 or "earned income report" from the IRS. If it was under the table, tough luck, its the same as being unemployed.

If the company went out of business and you worked there in the last 3 years, it gets stickier because DOT wants those Drug and Alcohol reports and any DOT recordable accidents listed as "preventable" or "non-preventable". Again - choose your companies carefully...

I've had a few former employers go under. Never presented an issue, probably since they were all over 5 years ago. What gets me is when companies (like the one I presently work for) contract their employee verification out to third parties like Equifax (theworknumber.com). Then, Equifax charges a fee for a prospective employer to verify employment. That's kind of a jerk move, in my book. Just answer the phone "Yes, John Schmoe was employed here MM/DD/YY to MM/DD/YY. Would/Would not rehire. Thanks for asking". I'm sure they pay thousands more for that service from Equifax than they would to staff an 800 number at corporate HQ, specifically for that purpose. Heck, it could be a web form and autoresponder.

Disclaimer: I am currently looking for part-time work, while full-time (40 hours) employed, so this is quite a timely and relevant topic for me.

my previous employer was (is) under the union. they couldn’t offer anything with regard to compensation, but they did call a meeting with me. nothing negative, simply wished me the best and said i always had a job if i wanted to come back. my employer before that one did the same thing. this was 2 employers over a 15 year span.

i believe the company’s response is a direct result of the employees character and work ethic.

DriverFacts is about $25 to verify employment (but they do have Drug&Alcohol and Accident Info)
TheWorkNumber (Equifax) is about $40 - and they only have Dates of Employment. Crazy, right?

Exactly - Don't burn your bridge! Give notice and be upfront. They will typically try to save you, or wish you luck if you're worth anything at all.
Obviously, you are looking for a new job for a reason, but its nice to do things the right way so that if your new place is a dumpster fire of a company, you can come back to open arms, and they might not even count it against your seniority...
