I've always been under the impression that unless it is an original temporary paper ID issued by the DMV a copy isn't legal. Maybe that was just company policy at the places I've worked but I've seen guys shut down by the company until they have their license again in these situations.
Never thought of that. Good idea right there.

Very good reason to have every item in your wallet listed, Card names and numbers, stored elsewhere like a list in the bunk of the truck and also another place. Like a family member or friend who can forward the information to you. Maybe by fax to the nearest truck stop.
One to have your DL number, even though that should be committed to memory. But two, to cancel credit cards etc...

If you have another photo ID with your name on it and you also remember your CDL # depending on the cop you may get a break but they have the right to fine you for Driving with out a license until you can prove NOT TRUE and you better pray that the DMV is open and it is Not a Weekend or a 3 -4 Day holiday coming up

that is one thing i can say i never lost in trucking is my wallet. had a few people try and steal it. they gave it back once they seen nothing but mold and a couple of old reciepts in it.

I got my wife a new mobile. Those Verizon guys needed an ID so I gave them my CDL. I ended up forgetting it at the store. I was halfway on my route heading towards a scale when I realized my mistake. Then on my way back, I had to go over another scale. Pretty tense drive for me since this is the first time I left my CDL somewhere other than on person. It was my fault for leaving it behind, but the Verizon store could have given me a quick voicemail since they got my number. Oh well. Not their responsibility to pick up after their customers. Thanks for all the input and advice. I will go to the DMV and see if I can get a "replacement" CDL. -
I have a few times.I assume your company has a copy of your cdl.You call them and have them fax you a copy ASAP and have them route you home so you can get issued a new license from your DMV.Don't keep driving ithout it.Next place you stop call your company.

Completely unrelated to your driving legally with your license in your possession but I would recommend that you get your old license back from the Verizon store. Whether you get it back or not you should immediately put a freeze on your credit reports to avoid any possibility of identity theft crimes.
road_runner Thanks this. -
Thx. I already got it back the following day. I usually only stay out 12 hours and come back to my home terminal. They didn't even seemed surprise to see me come into the store asking for it.

(c) Disqualification for serious traffic violations.
Table 2 to §383.51 contains a list of the offenses and the periods for which a person who is required to have a CLP or CDL is disqualified, depending upon the type of vehicle the driver is operating at the time of the violation, as follows:Table 2 to § 383.51
(7) Driving a CMV without a CLP or CDL in the driver's possession 1
1Any individual who provides proof to the enforcement authority that issued the citation, by the date the individual must appear in court or pay any fine for such a violation, that the individual held a valid CDL on the date the citation was issued, shall not be guilty of this offense.
In other words, yes, you will likely receive a citation, and yes, it is a serious violation IF you are convicted of the offense....but according to the regulations, all you need to do is provide a copy of your valid CDL (or they can look it up in their computer if you know your DL#) to prove that you indeed had a valid CDL at the time you were cited, just did not have it with you at the time you were stopped....provide proof of that valid CDL and the verdict is going to be "not guilty". No conviction = no worries about disqualification. You'll still probably have to go through the Data Q process to get the CSA points removed (fat chance)...but as far as your license is concerned, it really isn't all that big of a deal.
