way back, when trucking was still regulated, LTL companies all had a flatbed division with Union Owner Operators, but that was mainly for hauling steel. IIRC, CF used to have stubby flatbeds for going into town and peddling. and I think ABF has some for the U Pack Drom boxes that they are advertising as a part of their equipment rental program.

Special Commodity Divisions,ABF-Scat,CF-Arrowhead,i started with Time-DC in 1973 and stayed with Branch Motor Express until they closed the doors. The old 2 check system. One for the driver employee, one for the truck, plus Teamsters health and welfare paid by the company. None of this independent contractor crap. A real job! We hauled steel, machinery and LTL freight that would go on a flatbed. Although some of the guys did run vans, mostly automotives freight.

UPS has flat beds. I have seen them hauling flat steel, pipe, pvc pipe and other commodities.

iirc, you are driving for central? I have heard that central used to have some crazy Michigan centipede flats for hauling steel and heavy car parts around michigan, trailers with so many axles that you don't even need landing gear, it just sits level on its own!

Averitt has a flatbed division also but I don't think they do any ltl with it. Pretty sure it's all truckload freight.
