I have only hit one open Texas scale in the last, I am not even sure how many years. It was the one south of San Antonio. I was coming out of Laredo, this was over 4 years ago.

Back in the day Texas could be VERY trucker unfriendly. They used to have a 70/65 daytime 65/55 nighttime split speed limit. I never had a problem but there is a lot of stories about DOT issues on I- 10 near Van Horn, I can't comment on this because I have no direct experience with this. Even Pennsylvania another state that don't normally have open scales at least at one point in the past could be a pain. It has been almost 3 1/2 years since I have been on the road so I can't say what is what DOT wise today. However Texas has a history with several of the old hands.

    Edited to add

I just remembered listening to a trucker a few months ago telling about how bad it got on the loops around Houston during a CVSA 72 hour.

There were two (scales) in Texas I sometimes dreaded. Both the East and West bound Scales and Inspection Stations on I 20 about an hour east of Dallas. I remember an Officer there calling me a SOB. This was sometime just before my dad passed away in 1997. The officer said ALL truckers were SOB's, were criminals and it was his calling to rid the public of them.

He was saying that to get a rise out you. Maybe hoped you would mouth off and give him reason to get nasty with you.

I had a cop pull up while me and two buddies were parked taking a break while out riding motorcycles. He went through the routine of checking licenses etc then sat on the hood of his car saying how much he enjoyed responding to motorcyle accidents and always had a good laugh when the biker was killed.

And he came very close to getting that rise. Attacking a person going through the tension of an impending death of a parent in most cases will get said rise. I'm basically a laid back person that is slow to anger, but I was ready to put the 1/2 inch breaker bar I had in my hand across his noggin. He did issue a violation for a form and manner logbook violation, and I left.

I'm waiting on somebody to actually post the section by the numbers where it is specifically states it is a violation to log excessive time in the sleeper. Not some vague reference to keeping logs current because when your off duty the keeping your logs current is not applicable.
