Making this drive tomorrow. 83/277/90/285 to Fort Stockton is shorter but I am wondering if I am better off taking 281 up to San Antonio and getting on I-10?
McAllen to El Paso best routing?

Go through SAT unless you’d hit it at a bad rush hour time. Plus there’s lots more places to break versus going 83/90
Bdog and MagnumaMoose Thank this. -
Those us highways are a nice ride...hill country, lake country, not very many towns

Going up to San Antonio Is about 20 more miles, it will also be 30 to 45 minutes faster.

San Antonio way. Be cautious as to what time you hit it though. Otherwise, it's a nice ride.

I've driven that entire stretch of 83/277/90/285 several times but never in a single run. It's a good ride but if it were me I'd go through SA as well.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
I would definitely go by way of San Antonio. If you go through there during a bad time of day, bypass SA by getting on TX-173 just west of Pleasonton to catch I-10 at Kerville. I've routed that way when accidents during rush hour made a mess of things.

The 281 fwy is under construction from the 1604 north to Marshal road . Depending on the time you hit it , traffic will be a ##### .
Lepton1 Thanks this.
