I know my van experience here and my flat experience here. The two are not even comparable to serious people. The look in the mirror stuff is great but numbers don't lie. Like I've always said, if someone pulling van says they are making what open deck is then you simply need to see the facts. Even when the mercer people were talking me out of switching to flat I asked for three pay sheets, top, middle, and bottom percentile of van and flat, redacted personal info and of course they would not do it. As always what some call good money or doing well others would scoff at and vice versa. Monthly top 10 and bottom 10 earnings should be displayed for van and flat to put some of the story telling to rest.

I have no doubt that the average between the two is not comparable. We all know flats pay better overall. And I truly believe that anyone moving from vans to flats here will be better off. But flats pay better for two resons. A lot more work required and the cost and upkeep of equipment. And flats should and do get a slight premium for having to deal with this.
Everyone keeps saying that they need to see the proof. But I've seen it. And when you factor everything in (equip, fuel savings (I have a high roof) work effort, Yada yada) I find vans very comparable and in several instances better off. But don't get me wrong. I have no actual intention of going back to van. At sometime while you pull a flat I promise you will have the thought of "is this really worth it" go through your head. Last night happened to be one of those nights. -
The thing that has been the most refreshing pulling flats is money of course, ungodly low deadhead, and revenue to truck usage. I mean I don't work half as much and have better margins. I was to the point that I felt like a sucker for paying/using my own trailer for van pay and I believe a guy could make the same money with a carrier which he pulled their equipment. Only my opinion but payment, maintenance, not justifiable on a van at mercer.

Someone moving to flats because they want to make more money is a legit reason to make the move. You have recently stated that's why your making the move and more power to you. But if someone is going to state that money can't be made on the van side no matter how many people state they can then.....
So please don't include others in your statements. -
Hey I'm still new. I'm use to being told where to run. Use to run 70mph to get there too with less then 2 hours to spare on a load. This is new to me I'm learning as I go.
To me I'm kinda with @CJndaTruck on this. Flat is more work. Example yesterday load. Was told it's only 5 feet high so easy tarp for me. It 6 high in spots. That's a pain to tarp as I need to use all 3 tarps plus smoke. That's when I wished I was In van still lol. Would I go back? No but equipment cost sucks. And if your like me having breakdown down after breakdown. It gets to you fast. Would I go back no!
Oh or when you lose 2 of parts to your ratchet binders. Equipment cost seems to be high.CJndaTruck Thanks this. -
Lot less miles on fb side no doubt
