"Trucks can last a long time" this is so true it needs repeated. A twenty five year old truck makes exactly the same gross revenue as a brand new truck. And cost a hundred and fifty some thousand less, if you consider the cost of financing and insuring a new truck.

I would bet the number one reason new owner operators fail is because they buy more truck than they can afford.

That twenty something new driver looks really cool in his new stretched out pete, but the 45 yr old man driving the fifteen year old truck has a much cooler looking bank account balance.

The sad truth is that most people that do LP don't have the funds on hand to buy a truck. Even an older one. And if they mustered up the money to buy one they would still be a flat tire away from failing.

Now before someone tries to flame me remember, i was an LP. Not at Mercer but at a Mega, I did two leases and I'm not against the LP route to becoming an OO.

Few have the discipline it takes to put enough money aside for maintaining, repairing and paying taxes. And I'm sure that many of us could look back at when we first started down the OO path and say the same of ourselves.

The problem isn't that it can't be done. But take a new LP person and put them in with Mercers "We are not going to hold your hand" and most are bound to fail. Many can and will succeed but many won't.

TBH, often they are single elevators that are normal sized and your not forced to climb all over them. This was to a hospital and was Two super sized elevators. I would haul the normal sized ones again.

If you run with your own authority then Mercer IS a broker that you use, you cannot run under your authority and be leased to another carrier at the same time. It's one or the other ...

I'm just about finish paying for my 13 freightliner.. Another year and im done. If i can help it I'm not buying another truck in this lifetime unless something drastic happens. Trucking is better when you have no truck payment. The only think I may finance is trailers but that's it.. Death to truck payments lol
