Let me correct something about that avg. It is the all miles, to include dh. It usually floats around 1.70, at least the few times i call to check it out.

I think the mean number would be a bit more telling than the average, however. Also, some guys focus on long haul and have better economies of scale simply through putting more miles down. We also have a few RGNs that distort what that average means to a flatbedder. I'm guessing our growing van division distorts the number back to the low side, but they aren't tarping either. Really, I would like to know the mean all miles number just for flatbeds with a weekly total miles number to get a better picture of how my truck is comparing.

Typically, I range in all miles between 1.70 to 1.80. One month in Spring I averaged 2.65 all miles! Thre problem is
dy volume. Some weeks I've ran 3500 miles and some i ran 1000. I'm doing really good on 300 to 500 mile loads to points with very little dh required. I won't say exactly, because i'll have 2000 Mercer trucks chasing my plan. It's kinda like planning a stock portfolio. It works great until too many start copying the plan.

I like what Sammons is doing. They have an agent network but also their contractors can book loads with ITS!
I've had some real money losing problems due to some of our agents being AWOL. It really is disappointing not to be able to do as much long haul because I can't trust a particular agent to keep me busy and profitable. Any of you Sammons drivers with any feedback on how that ITS system is helping?

But, yeah, that really gets my goat when our agents have the option to use outside trucks, but we contractors cannot use outside brokers.

For what its worth mean and average are the same thing. Perhaps you meant median, meaning the middle.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but 1.70-1.80/mi is not that great. My contractors average better RPM (aprox 1.85), and they are only paid 68% because they pull my trailers.

What? The coordinator needs to be able to coordinate? A little too vague for me there.

I've left it all up to my coordinators(had 2) for about 3 days each. They know nothing! They barely have time to take my check call. I do all my own load planning but will call to get details like how many mt trucks are sitting there, or i need help getting a load to get me into Louisville or to get home. Other than that, they do not have the time to loadplan.

If it were all gravy, you probably wouldn't find me on here pissin and moaning and kicking the polyannas in the teeth.
The number one reason for that low an all miles average is DH percentage.

And, average can be considerably greater than median. The middle of the bell curve is what i what to know.

I dont understand, why is the coordinator trying to talk him out of the loads?

Unless, he has someone else in mind for them, someone with more seniority ?

Looks like the coord. would let him haul whatever he chooses...

Maybe he's trying to save him from making bad choices?
The coordinator would be seeing the big picture and know the company's lanes.
