I have to wonder why if things are so terrible at Mercer why some have hung around for so long. there are plenty of folks at mercer that have been around 20 years and plenty 10 year guys, etc.

i myself have been there 2 years the first of february. i have done well enough to be satisfied and not comtemplating leaving.

are things running gangbusters enough to be able to just take a load anywhere and know something will just be waiting for me? no.

am i having to work the load board more and be more selective about taking loads to good reload areas? you dang right i am having to do that.

am i willing to load and reload every day of the week if need be to make my revenue? you dang right some weeks i do

on the other hand if unloading one day and reloading the next day puts me in the revenue and preferential load area i wish for, thats what i do.

autocar just posted one the best posts i have seen on any thread on this forum. her post of a 2.43 a mile to her and then a lesser paying reload back to still avg over 2 a mile is where its at. some of these fellows could learn a thing or two from her.

the amazing part of threads like this is how everyone always posts how bad all these companies are and how they have starved them to death. but you never see anywhere in that post the part they played in it,

it seems that load choices, the areas they end up in, the area they live in, their operating costs have no bearing on anything apparently.

what some never seem to understand is the same problems that plague them at one carrier, seem to always happen at the next carrier they lease to. or if they get authority or give up on their authority the same issues follow when they lease to a carrier.

they look to everyone else for reasons they are doing as well as they hope, but many times also fail to look at the reflection in the mirror for some of the answers.

no one likes to blame themselves for anything, thats just ingrained human nature. but you have to buck that trend and be willing to look within yourself for improvement.

you also have to be able to adapt to actual conditions in the marketplace and not react to how you wish things were or think they should be.

you have to be able to know good areas from bad areas immediately when offered a load, you may not have time to check it all out and then call back.

its seems very fond for many to be called kool-aid drinkers and know-it-alls , and wearers of rose-colored glasses.

this same conversation in this thread i have heard played out in one form or another for 33 years now, only difference is its now on the internet and its used to be on the cb and at the counter.

what many fail to even consider is the actual reason why some of us are happy and others are not. they wont look at old jokers like me or autocar or flightline for the tidbits that might make them happy and more sucessful

one thing that will take time and only time can acquire, is the simple wisdom that no matter the circumstance or how bad it is , the sun will come up tommorrow and the world will continue on whether. things truly arent as dire and little things arent nearly as important as they seem.

i too was once like the pinball in the machine being flipped and bounced about .

i simply didnt have a good game plan. i do now.

i simply bend over, shut up, and pull the plow down another row, then i turn around and do it again. day after day, week after week, year after year.

but i dont plow thru rocks now, i go around em, going thru just breaks your plow. some never learn that

for myself i like to do at least 180,000 a year on the least possible miles . i like to do a min of 4 grand a week . on the least possible number of miles.

for rough purposes , it takes half of what i gross for fuel, truck payment, trl, etc etc . half of gross covers all that.

i got the nest egg already put back, but i pay myself a paycheck each week and the rest stays in the truck acct. i pay myself 750 a week. up until 4 years ago i paid myself 600 a week.

2011 i avg 1.94 a mile loaded and empty on 105,000 miles and 2012 i did 184,000 on right 100,000 but i took at seperate times 9 full weeks off(sometimes 10 days) for hs graduations, army basic graduations, airborne school graduationa and ait graduations, stepfathers funeral,, etc. threw me off my game a bit as i did some DH runs to get home thus the lower gross .

i also dont tend to get to into weekly numbers, i look more to monthly avg's and quarterly results . 16 grand a month , will get ya 192 a year

i pull more over 2 buck a mile loads than i do less than 2, i got my method. tarps, haz mat, od, and twic needed eliminate 75 per cent of my competition for loads.

You guys call me a job hopper stupid dont know what im doing so on and so on all i know are numbers are numbers and to do 20 grand in two months and take 2700 hundred home is not my idea of trucking and the reason im still here flightline is because i was trying to give it a chance. but at this rate my family will be living in our car soon and all im doing is running this truck into the ground so you guys could have it this isnt the place to be for me. this last settlement did it for me to finally get some of those deductions off my account thinkin well ok maybe the sun is going to shine and then to be left with 560 dollars out of 1800 owed to me is ######## mercer could care less about any one off us and for you aholes to call me a liar welli take it with a grain of salt because half of ya wouldnt know a good weeks pay if it was dropped off at your door. but do others a favor and tell them the real deal here just because on paper you grossed 120 150 180 a year whatever doesnt mean your all making money. and ya broketed freight the load i brought out here came from another trucking co who gives his excess to them so theres two hands in the soup and ironically the load going back is from a broker who the shipper out here told me hes good freinds with and its not mercers agent who put me on this either so again loads cut twice before it gets to the truck just like the air conditioners out of oklahoma and alot of others ive hauled. no wonder these rates hardly go up with the fuel theres too many hands in the pot . i came here to get away from that crap you really think 4800 to oregon and 4100 back is doing well when fuel is 4 dollars a gallon?then the little bit you have coming in the end mercer finds a way to take off of ya thats ######## moves right there and as far as happy people here i met a van guy and two flatbed guys on this trip and all three of em basically said there one paycheck away from being out of business. as a matter of fact the van guy confesses alot of his loads are ch robinson loads thats pathetic! their rates suck to start with then you gonna pay for a trailer and give up 25 percent to haul that garbage wow! and hes a 5 year man here that conforms it right there some of you guys are clueless but hey go mercer!

I have never pulled a load that came from another broker or trucking company, I have heard they do exist. Kmx, why does it seem that every time you get on here and complain that its because YOU took a load out to no mans land? And I haven't seen where anyone has called you stupid, or implied it. In fact, it sounds like skateboardman maybe sent you his phone number, to help you, but you didn't bother to help yourself and call him.

Some people don't want help or some can't be helped.

Says he's going broke yet he's still here. Must not be any greener grass though he talks of it.
