I am in the process of signing on with Mercer now. I am approved and just have to send copies of my physical, license, ect. but all the verifications are done. So I am digging out all my stuff to send them.
I have heard such good things about mercer from so many other o/o's. I am new to flatbedding and probably have no idea what I am getting into. I have been running containers here is Cincinnati for years now. I hate those #### things so much, and the depot yards. They are awful.
Anyway, after reading most of the posts on here I am starting to have second thoughts. I have learned a lot about how to work the load board and preplaning the trips (looking for loads out of the area I would be hauling to). But I see so much on here about bad loads, low pay and supposedly how things are changing for the worse.
So here is my question, What is the deal? Is this just the "old guys" complaining and missing the "old days" or is mercer really not a good place to sign on and try flatbedding? I am out here for two reasons.
1. I absolutely love driving a truck. I know, I must be mentally "touched" or something.
2. To make some decent money.
Please let me know before it is too late and I waste a bunch of money getting all the equipment.herfinharry Thanks this. -

Sure do see alot of Mercer trucks sitting around alot. Either they are making too much money to run or no money at all. Might be a toss up here.

Beethoven, first let me say don't be to discouraged with what you have read here from what? Three posters? Kenworthy is going off about some kind of conspiracy against him from a few people in the office, as far as I am concerned he has zero credibility, read his posts. Kmx wants to piss and moan, but when it comes down to it he doesn't seem to want to have any help from anyone to better his situation here, we have tried. Bayou, I told him how long ago in this thread not to put a truck on here, because from reading his posts and threads in the past that he would not be happy here, he didn't listen.
Bottom line is Mercer is a very good company, this winter has been unusually slow for us and other companies as well, some have even said it to be comparable to the likes 08/09 when the economy went south. Now remember that some people saying that are not here, but at other companies as well.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 6, 2013

I don't care what anyone has to say you can't run for under $2/mi than have 20%+ dead head miles and stay profitable.
I'm not saying mercer is bad I'm saying they need to reach out and get more agents and find better paying freight. All I wanted to see was there load board and nobody would let me look at it until I had a truck leased on. I call it "putting your money were your mouth is" and they won't do it. Mercer never has lied about anything Chris said there trucks are doing $1.68/mi my truck is at $1.74/mi. Almost ever load has been tarpped exept 3-4 loads last load was pipe out of Texas pipe in Houston that went to PA paid $1.70/mi.
Like I've said before I can care less if he makes it or not I'm only making a few hundred a week and all that's doing is paying the note. Only reason his numbers are up is he is doing short hauls 200-300 mile runs and even some of them just pay over $2./mi. The truck made $3,300 gross last week was parked for two days out of that he spent $1,600 in fuel his check was $680 I think and was in the truck the full week 7 days do you tell how long anyone can keep a driver like that?
I fully understand why so many mercer drivers have them big sleepers it's because they stay parked more than they run! And that the truth.....
All I'm saying is I see five times the loads on the open boards at better rates and that's not saying much.
