Ok, a better example. I did a bunch of loads, only paid $500. Reasons others turned down the loads, and they were quite vocal about why these loads sucked ....

    1. I don't take anything less than $750
    2. tarp MIGHT be required
    3. I'm a real truck driver, I DON'T do local work.
    4. No detention paid.
    5. Might have hazmat

So that left me with 2-4 loads to do a day. Pick up, go exactly 5 miles down the road to deliver, then reload something there and go back to the starting point. Each is a separate load. 10 miles and $1000. Often got three trips in, sometimes four. stayed at this for a couple days, truck stop only 3 miles away for showers & food, can sleep at customer warehouse for peace and quiet.

File in the "why drivers don't make it at Mercer" column.

I swear half the drivers in this business are NOT out here to make money but to "live the lifestyle". Too bad Harley Davidson doesn't make trucks, they'd make a killing!

Even if you dead head all the way back you are making money @3 per mile. And the reality is you aren't dhing the entire way back on a load with any miles to it, you will be able to stop and grab a load on the way back. if it was short miles 3 bucks a mile is way to cheap.

Great post. A grand after fuel a day is awesome money. Heck 500 adter fuel on real short miles is pretty darn good.

Trucking is not a life style. It's a business. Let those fools have their cheap 2k mile runs. I net the same or nearly so, running short and sleeping in my house every night with the wife on one side of me and the baby on the other.

@HalpinUout congrats on the Cubbies win.

It's looking like the Blackhawks have knocked the rust off now after the first 2 games, and Montreal is setting itself up for another EPIC meltdown. Hockey season is looking to be good early.

Pete call me crazy (many do) and I'm NOT telling you how to run your truck. Heck most think I run mine wrong. But if you have an APU on that truck don't buy another. Put that money aside for an APU on the next truck (yes one day you will get a new (at least to you) truck). Heck put that money away for anything except putting another APU on that POS. That is just my opinion you don't have to listen to it.

Anyway I've been sitting in Springfield for two weeks now. The paint shop screwed up and I'm waiting on a new hood part to be painted. But all the rest of the truck is done. Heck it looks sharp now. I should be out of here Monday. But dang I've loved this time off The girl from the shop took us out to Thursday Night FB last night and we all had a blast. Now that is what I call customer service.
