I was wondering the same. If He is not doing well on his own with those numbers but wanting to sign on to Mercer expecting to make that or more? Don't misunderstand me about Mercer. I love it here at Mercer and they'd probably have to shoot me to get me to leave but I don't see anywhere close to those numbers and I'm sure he won't either on a regular basis. And it'd be a shame to sign on and then find out the truth.
I think someone here may be thinking we make $2+ per mile before the fuel surcharge but that is including the fuel. And mostly only step's and double drops loads pay that. And most loads here are flatbed.

Why would you consider leasing to a company that is weak in the area you live? Think Mercer is a good company but not for someone based in your area.

This is the email that I got in response to some questions I had about Mercer from the recruiter assigned to me. I don't think anything here is classified information and the rates are pretty much the same as where I am at now (to the truck including fsc):

Hey Allan, For the month of August here is what our fleet's averaged out at:Trailer Loaded miles Overall milesStep $2.04 $1.70Flat $1.98 $1.66Van $1.64 $1.44(Some guys did less, some guys did more, just depending on how they ran but this is what the fleets averaged out to)Call me for the Columbia, SC area quotes. (I can't print them off but we can go over what we have in that area by phone)We do have O/O with multiple trailers. They will pull the Flat during the summer and Van during the winter so that shouldn't be an issue.Call me if you have any other questions. Thanks

My initial interest in Mercer was to buy a van trailer but I could not see that working at those rates with the bills that I have. I guess I'm approved and have an open invitation to lease on to Mercer but will stay where I am for now. It felt good when our VP of Operations called me when she heard I had been talking to Mercer and I agreed to give it some more time.

I agree on the Steps and Flats but with the price of fuel (even after cost+ discounts) the van rate is too low in my opinion. I don't doubt skateboarder's numbers, he has been trucking a long time and knows the Mercer lanes obviously but I would be careful about raising expectations too high or there may be a lot of very bitter new hires such as brodgers.

bad as those van rates look they are not bad. last month was real bad for me. bad enough to make me go back otr from a gig i was hoke every weekend and thru the house twice. my every mile rate dropped from the $1.55-$1.60 range to $1.29. my fuel runs $0.79 on those loads, heavy and all two lane.

plus i have never met one person who has said mercer van division is worth working for.

i'm not a fan of van, did it for a year and will never go back.. did flat for six months before van. my operating cost then was around $1.25 or so with fuel (i'd have to go look at old spread sheets). I know it was low enough to where people would sit for a week in a bad area waiting on a good load to get out, i'd grab a load of tarp lumber for $1.56 and still come out on top. No need for me to sit when it's gonna pay the bills with a little left over. all of my bills at home total to just under $1800 a month, everyone can plug in the rest of the numbers and find out my operating costs are still low, i dont need any driver pay as long as my bills at home are getting taken care of. that's one reason i can understand how some guys need almost $3 just to survive, they much live in a 6bd, 9bath 6500sqft home with buck naked women running around playing with water ballons from 9am - 5pm.

don't ask why there's more bathrooms then bedrooms.
