How old and little was the Cat rebuild for $3500. Labor alone can run more than that.
Maybe the cat dealer in WA will let him do the labor in their shop to save on cost. LOL

this was in 06 if I'm remembering right. my dad's 93 w9. that was just parts, the labor was him and me in our front yard. Just an inframe tho, didn't have to pull the crank or cam. so bearings, rods, pistons, liners, etc. 3406c engine, pretty sure it's a c model, identical to a b model with the exception of the fuel pump being electronically controlled.

Also lot of extra cost goes into actual cat parts. And I do beleive most OEM parts are better quality, not necessarly worth the difference but better.
And at a Cat repair shop, they tend to sell only cat parts.
I've heard from others, that actual cat complete rebuild by cat is around 30K.

I plan on doing mine in spring. I'll do most of the work but still plan on spending 8K on parts.

Man I hate that, atleast you have the money to fix it, most people just don't have the cash to fix a major brake down like yours. It could of waited another month when it's really slow but than again it's never the right time!!

Wow and double Wow! recently looked into a platnum rebuild on a volvo that included new crank, cam, head, and turbo. It was only 23k if you can say only. A new crate motor was 26 with turbo labor and all. And i thought that was high.

That yellow paint is expensive, I had my Acert in-framed a couple of years ago, and it was $30,700. The only thing that wasn't new was the block, crank and cam. But I did have them put in a new fan clutch, stainless coolant tubes, and all new coolant hoses and fuel lines. So it would have been well under $30k if not for all the extras.

Last year the quote in writing for a standard platinum inframe (from CAT) on my C15 was just a hair under $19,000. I ended up spending $28,000 out the door on a complete platinum inframe which also had these extras: new camshaft, new front seal, new aftermarket damper (this was actually replaced 6 months prior to inframe so I included the extra $500 part cost on that 28K above), new aftermarket exhaust manifold, new air cartridge drier, new aftermarket 4 row radiator, new aftermarket CAC, all new coolant hoses, & all new fuel lines. It felt like I got ripped a new one but from what you guys are saying seems like a pretty good deal from a CAT house. There were no ECM changes (per my request) to the Haney flashed ECM and no questions asked, nor roadblocks thrown up, about my obviously non-stock non waste gated Borg warner turbo. But that's why I always use them for motor work I can't handle and why I'd have put the truck on a hook dragging it clear across the country to put it in their shop if I had to. I did drive it for about another 400 miles after discovering coolant going into the oil to get it to them.

A previous employer was getting all their Cats rebuilt due to oil seeping from the headgasket. I would have run them for a lot longer.

They didn't get the radiator hoses nor the fuel return line replaced. Guess what doesn't like like to be mess with after it's been on the truck for more then a million miles? First week, I was pouring fuel all over. Good thing I was close to the house. Then the next week I blew a radiator hose.

I don't know why they wanted to be so cheap after spending $22k on a rebuild.
