No owner-operator company can compete head to head with an all company truck company, or a lease purchase company. The o/o's need too much money to stay afloat, and the company needs their cut, which means higher rates charged.
Then there's always the possibility there is a new Mercer brokerage company taking a bite out before Mercer Transportation gets the load.
I was leased to a company back in the early 80's that had killer paying freight. There was no need to look too hard in the NE for a return load, just dead head home and get another one, the rates were that good.
Next thing I knew the rates were about 30-40% lower. They had opened up a brokerage in the building next door and all the loads were going through them first.
