Drivers have been dreamin of controlling rates by refusing to haul below $x.00 since deregulation. If it worked there wouldnt be cheap freight out here. The problem is the scale they think will change things. They talk in 100s of trucks. Theres 3.5 million trucks in the US. It would take 100,000s truck thinking.

So my truck costs me $300 a day whether it runs or not. So I sit for 2 or 3 days waiting, hoping that the load comes up to the magical $3 a mile so people like you don't give me crap for running a cheaper profitable business. Now, the load has to go up even more to cover my sitting expenses. Now, running the $3 a mile load plus adding the extra sitting expenses I should've just ran it for $2 a mile instead of wasting 2 days of productive running. Now, go run your business and worry about what you can control. Freight rates are not in your control or mine for that matter.

Ramen noodles go with new truck payments. Running around in a 10 year old, paid for truck means: less stress, more money in your pocket and more time off.
This said by an old man that ran over 4 million miles and only owned 3 trucks in that time frame. Those 10 year old trucks are the reason I'm retired, living very comfortable, good health and stress free.
There's a difference between hauling some cheap loads because you want the load and you can make some money doing it. And, hauling cheap loads just to keep the wheels turning, trying to make truck payments.Last edited: Sep 1, 2019

This maybe be true for some but definitely not entirely for all...
I traded in a paid off truck for a new truck with a payment...
I certainly don't eat "Ramen Noodles" 98% of the time I dont even eat out of the truck. I carry absolutely nothing to cook with but a microwave and it's used to reheat left overs that was purchased at some restaurant... Not fast food.
I actually like the trade off having a payment on a new truck and being able to relax on the weekends or when I'm off versus having to monkey around and spend my time off fixing my old paid off truck.
For me it's less stress with a payment.
Regardless payment or no payment I'm certainly not one of the guys here that's taking the cheap loads that seem to fly off the load board here. I'll sit or deadhead all day long before I take a cheap load just because I have a payment to make.
Some of us started our owner operator journey well ahead of a lot of folks and are very financially stable already. That itself eliminates lots of stress...
Things certainly could change with the truck I have as far as shop time but if it keeps up running smoothly with limited repairs needed I'll be trading it in every 3-5 years on another new truck with a payment just so I dont have to deal spending days off "under the hood"
What works for one might not work for another person...Carlinho, PoleCrusher, Wespipes and 3 others Thank this. -
Maybe that's why I didn't find it... I never lifted the seat cushion I was looking underneath... I'll check that out tomorrow
