Here is a pointer for you young guys. Once you get good at tarping, never ever ever take a picture of a tarped load and show your wife. That was 20 years ago and ever since then guess what I get to do every Christmas eve? Almost 3 am and im still wrapping.
Orange713, whoopNride, thaistick and 6 others Thank this. -
Well I’m torn. On one hand I can go to Landstar and save a trailer payment for a lower percentage. On the other hand I can go to Mercer for a trailer payment and a higher percentage. I guess it all evens out but only those that have done both can say for sure. If it’s only a small difference either way I don’t care. The determinate will be how the companies “feel” as far as comfort factor. Anyway, I’ll be seeing the trucker tax and finance guy in Jan to get this ball rolling. I’ll prob end up applying both companies and make a last minute decision.

Are you going van or flat? I don't mind a trailer payment if it will be mine, but personally I would never pay to strictly rent a trailer from a company.
-
I believe the Mercer flat payments are to own. Mercer van payment to rent. I kind of don’t want to go flat unless the net income is another ballpark from van net income. I’ll go flat if the money talks to me
yeah you know, kind of difficult to rationalize making rental payments on half your equipment while making payments to own on the other half. It’s like worlds colliding. I know everyone is different metabolism. But that would be hard for me personally to digest. Which I guess leans me toward flat. Wow talking myself into flatbedding aren’t I?Last edited: Dec 25, 2019

You can buy your own van you don’t have to rent theirswhoopNride Thanks this.

And you can buy your own flat too. When I was trying to sell my 53 x 102 trailer just to get rid of it for a measly $5000 and everyone else was selling for $10-12K no one would buy it. I never did figure that out.

If I had a shorter truck I would have bought it right up. But a 53 would put me in permit territory.
-
You can pull a 53' van with that truck all day long without permits. You're wheelbase is 280 if I remember right. You'd be fine.
-
Many states have a 75 ft over all length restriction. Even Florida does but they allow an exception if your king pin to center axle group is 41 or less. So I can pull a 53 down here only with the axles slid all the way forward. Which is fine for lightweight ups stuff but nothing with any weight to it.
