Did you show it as all off duty or did you mix in sleeper berth?

If it had been all off duty I don’t think he could have written you up for it. To me it seems a pretty far stretch to write you up with a empty trailer.
Has your safety department said anything about it?

But they've been writing tickets for those honest mistakes since the dot came into existence. Form and manner violations have always been a thing. Heck I got a ticket for forgetting to sign my log book back in 1995.

Then you can fight that ticket. You do not need to write shipment Id for an empty trailer. However if you do a long move while empty you do. A simple no load or deadhead will suffice.

I'm not surprised, it being Iowa. I had a dot write me up on a logbook violation when I was still on paper. On a day off my totals were line 1, 24 hr. line 2, 3, and 4 zero hrs. but I forgot to write the total at the bottom, the "24". Like it could be anything but 24. A fine example of what to expect in Iowa. Only place I ever had any problems with the dot.

Well I hope you learned your lesson. Another example that proves all drivers run around falling asleep. Obviously you were too tired (on you day off) to put in that total. Now you have been corrected and properly chastised, so let's hope the roads are safer now, and you will not repeat such an egregious safely violation endangering the lives of others. DOT cop is a real hero for the lives he saved.
