It's called Bestpass and the licensing dept can help you get set up on it but you still have the account in your own name and have to replenish it via credit card every month to maintain a minimum balance like you do now.

I just called bestpass and set up my own acct , they have mercer info, just faxed a copy of registration. simple and same as bestpass from mercer you got to have a credit card on file to fund it.

Since you pay fuel tax at the pump, does Mercer reimburse it quarterly?

everyone pays fuel tax at the pump. when mercer pays the fuel tax, they pay any additional fuel tax owed, it doesn't mean they reimburse for the fuel tax paid at the pump.

do a bit more research on ifta and how fuel tax works

I know how it works. But when someone tells me they pay the fuel tax, I would think that means they pay all of it. Not a big deal, I just want to understand how it works. I am considering going to Mercer.

Alot of carriers make more money on accessorials than the do from you pulling their freight.
The majority of carriers give creidt for 5 mpg on fuel tax, so, it's a money maker for them.
So, if you by all your fuel in Indiana they really pound you on fuel tax. I've seen guys end up owing 3-4 hundred bucks a quarter because of this.

wolf, the term " we pay the fuel tax" is commonly accepted to mean any additional tax owed because of not buying enough fuel in some states. at many carriers it isn't uncommon for guys to owe 200 to 300 a quarter in fuel tax. at least at mercer you never worry about that, you can buy fuel where its actually cheapest at the pump and not buy cheapest according to fuel tax. and if you do end up with a credit, they apply it to the cost of next years tag, they don't keep it.

For Indiana, Ky, and Ohio, the fuel tax at the pump is only partial paid at the pump. Like Indiana is 14cents per gallon at the pump and additional 11 surcharge paid via IFTA. So no matter where you buy and run, your gona owe IFTA buty Mercer pays it and encounges you to buy at the cheapest place all the time even if it's Indiana.
Guys feel free to correct my numbers if they've changed since I've had my own authority.
Also Mercer gets us a pretty good discount on fuel purchased. I'm thinking it averages around 30cents per gallon depending on where you get fuel.

More Mercer Koolaid for me Please. LOL

So we are better off to buy in the cheaper states like Missouri and to run away from Flor-I-DUH??

If I were to do something crazy (or smart) like buying my own truck this year, what expenses can I count on from Mercer? Such as insurance and other stuff I don't notice due me working for a contractor.
