Is there an advantage on sliding the axle back to make it a tandem, except maybe slightly better tire wear?

I'd probably forget I slide it and get an overweight ticket because of it slide back

I can take mine to Canada ;)

Sometimes it's a fight to back it in a parking spot, but when the spread is closed, it backs itself in.

As far as backing, I dump the air off the back axle and that makes backing in pretty easy.

Spread axle is allowed in canada, just not given proper weight rating. (20K for both if I'm correct)

Oh yeah now I'm jeolous too. I had been checking that one out on the truck paper along with another one. Snooze ya loose as they say. I never called about it but I think you got a keeper there. I'm sure you considered this so I'm curious to the empty weight if you know it. The other one I been watching is similar. Flight line I would be interested in your empty weight with you step too if you don't mind sharing it.

I can do payload of 42,500.
But I do carry alot of extra equipment like ramps, several tarps, 7'vee boards and dunnage.
I think my bobtail is around 24,500 but my truck is little smaller than Vince's new one.

Thanks that's good info. I pull a flat so I would be 1500 or so lighter just in trailer weight with same truck and same stuff in it. 24500 is that full fuel and water?

I have the an extra light step so don't bet on being lighter. My step weighs in just over 10K. I've been told Mercer trailers are 4K heavier.
Also the 24500 is not full of fuel and water. It's the min. fuel to run with (3/4 of one tank) and empty on water.

I strongely recommend if your gona go into a big house, get your own very light trailer first. Fontain is almost one of the lightest.

Weight can really hurt you in getting out of the bad areas. It bites me sometimes.

Yeah my trailer with tarps and chains and everything in it, I have a head board, it will have to go when I get one, weighs in about 10300. I have a friend with a new 180 and 53ft combo step, he can only scale about 38500

I can see getting rid of the headboard, but your gona haveta replace it with a headache rack which is proabably gona weigh more than an headboard.
I built a 4'deep drom box for a headache rack so I can walk in and hang things up without losing access to my backdoor.
