Hi guys, I just bought my first truck 96 pete with a Detroit ( yes it doesn't pull like a cat.. lol.. but I bought it for better fuel mileage) I was talking to the recruiter at mercer and it sounds like a good company, just wondering if anyone had any advice, or anything for me? I live in Ontario Canada, don't care when I am home or where I go as long as the load is payin.

LOL still very solid advice for the new Canadians..

Last I heard, Mercer was only taking on O/O with a truck of 97' or newer. I hope this isn't the case for you. Maybe they let you slip in since your canadian. They love to get a canadian O/O since they rarely can get the loads covered in Canada.

Thanks Flightline, Yeah Ray i believe his name was, said usually they don't take anything older then a 97 but they would let me put my 96 on. Is the reason they cant get the Canadian loads covered because they don't pay very well.. Or because nobody wants to or can cross the border?

A lot of drivers don't want to cross the border, and then again there will be many that can't for various reasons. Then others don't want to deal with speed limiter rules in ON & QC, then there are wheelbase restrictions for those with bigger tractors, and then the issues with spread axles in most of the provinces. That all amounts to a smaller number of drivers willing to do any cross border work. That's fine with me because I'll take all the loads I can to Canada, I find most of them pay quite well. I just bought another trailer the other day with a sliding spread so I can do more loads to the western provinces.
If you're in Ontario then you are probably in the best area, it seems most of the outbound freight comes out of there, much less out of the other provinces. Right now my buddy is taking a load to NF, two stops, paying over $7K from the carolinas. Ferry is paid for, those are not our expense, just make sure you have it cleared first. He's approved for the west side inbound and east side (St John's) return which is the expensive one, around $1400 and around 7 hours I think. Same with loads to Vancouver.
All the drivers I've met from ON & QC seem to be doing well. Some have spreads, about half have tridems, the rest have sliding spreads.96pete379 Thanks this.
