I believe the bonus is if you have a o8 or newer truck that can go to california. Also you would get 80% verses 75% for us regular schmoes.

Hi guys, I'm wondering if it's possible to haul steel profitably as an O/O with Mercer and and stick to MN, WI, IL, IA, OH, IN, MI, KY, MO....I live in a south suburb of Chicago, and would like to be home nightly or every other night, I know currently a lot of Kaplan O/O do this, but was wondering if Mercer might be an option?

Rerm, that should be doable but I dont do it because i'm a slow tarper so I dont concintrate on steel. It takes me to long to do the loads so I cant make enough money. I go wherever the money goes. If you had the right tarps or a covered wagon you could do better. There are plenty of steel loads in the areas that you listed.

I've been reading this thread for months. And I see theirs no dumb question with you guys which I'm thankful for. As of right now I've been local doing foodservice for the past 4 years and have no flatbed exp. I'm really wanting to get back on the road and pull flats as a O/O. I'm tired of this working for somebody else. Kinda been my dream since I used to ride with my dad. I have the down payment for a truck and half the working Capitol I'll need to start out. I was considering going to a flatbed company here in Florida to get some tarping and load securment exp and build up the other half of my Capitol. They say mercer offers a extra day of load securment but they didn't mention tarping which is what I really wanna learn so I'm versitile. Once again thanks to you all

I think you'd learn more on here about tarping than any class.
Most of tarping is common sense but there is some great tips and tricks on this fourm about tarping also.

Thats how I learned tarping, lots of advice on here and just common sense. Sure you won't know everything but you will learn. I have been behind the wheel for 26 years and never tarped before mercer. You can almost always ask another flatbedder where you are loading and they will usually be happy to offer advice. Sometimes you can offer to help them if they help you. I did that more than once. Like in chicago in feb this one guy and I was loading in bays next to each other with a 6 foot tarp on steel pipe, I helped him wrestle his tarps then he helped me. Both of us finished quicker than by ourselves. Worked out very well. Taylor you will do just fine.

Ok thanks fellas. I've been watching YouTube vids also so that makes sense to me. I would've been taking a 20k paycut leaving the company I'm at now but I was thinking the trade off would've been some experience. So for now I'll build up my maintenence acct a lil quicker then jump into the world of ownership.
