Part of an email I just received from Mercer:

    August 12, 2014

Mercer has been in the business of “Moving One More Load Safely” for 37 years. We’ve seen many changes over those years, but our commitment to safety and compliance has not changed. What has changed is how we achieve our goal of being the safest fleet in the trucking industry.

We are continuing to install ELDs on a voluntary basis. Effective immediately, drivers who are called into Louisville for a log reorientation will be informed that their next log violation will result in the immediate installation of an ELD.

As of September 1, 2014: All new contractors will be required to have an ELD installed during orientation.

Current contractors will be expected to have an ELD installed in 2015 on or before their Louisville inspection date. If you elect to wait until ELDs are required by Mercer you must remain violation free. If you receive any HOS violation you will be asked to have an ELD installed or leave Mercer. Remember you will be under DOT scrutiny if you remain on paper logs (the longer you wait, the better the chance of a violation). Also, after your Louisville inspection date in 2015 you will be responsible for all ELD associated charges. All units without an operating ELD will be placed out of service on June 30, 2016.

The policy for mechanical engines has yet to be determined. Our policy will be developed when the actual ELD rules are published.

We know you’re safe. We just want our safety numbers to reflect what we already know.

    Sincerely,

    Mercer General Management

I think I'm just going to get it over with. My laptop screen quit working earlier this year so I've been using my tv as a monitor but it's a pain to have to go back in the sleeper every time I need to make an entry on DDL. I can use my iPad for the ELD, scanning and sending paperwork and printing wirelessly so I won't need to buy a new computer this way.

LOL TECHNOLOGY AT ITS BEST..what year is your truck mines older but it has a ECM on it and that's where they are suppose to hook it up to,but I was just wondering if anybody with a OLDER TRUCK SAY 79-94 TRUCK WAS RUNNING A ELD.I'm assuming they would either have to get RID OF THEY TRUCK ...or come up with some type of 3rd PARTY WIRELESS DEVICE to attach to the truck somewhere.

In my opinion this is a direct cause of the lower hiring standards of late.

imho , they don't need eld's, if a driver gets a justified log book violation terminate them... before rehire they have to go to retraining at govment approved facility for the criminally challenged :biggrin_25525:
