But it's much more than that, The young drivers will never know the freedom we once had. Load up on the East Coast, make a loaded phone call. Call in once a day, then deliver.
No one knew where you were, except you. No ELD's No PrePass, No fuel cards, No cell phones. Just the driver and America. The only one we could count on was our self, our truck, and the other drivers.
The freedom aspect was great. I do like my cell phone, computer, gps, Mercers great fuel card, and this luxury truck I drive. But I do miss the freedom, and the Smoky and the Bandit aspect of it. It's a great time to be old.Last edited: Aug 13, 2014

What is the king pin setting on the Great Dane flat beds Mercer leases?

Mercer's ELD is through JJ Keller's Encompass system.
the device is installed in the truck and connects to the 5 or 9 pin connection in the cab to the ECM. I have the first generation unit which works with Android devices only, and which also has an external GPS puck stuck on the dash with a wire running back to the ELD. It is my understanding the second generation devices which work with Android and iOS devices both, has an internal GPS.
As far as editing, at no time is the driver capable of changing any times or duty status after it has been recorded. Sometimes locations can be edited. If there is a mistake you can call back to the log department and they can make a change if it is justified. The original information is still always shown on the log, plus the change to the log, the reason for the change and who changed it. The most common errors are forgetting to log out at the end of the day, waking up and finding you've been on duty during your ten hour break.
The program needs an active cellular internet connection to function properly. Data usage is minimal, between 35 and 130 kb per day.
This is and ELD - Electronic Logging Device - ONLY. No one is tracking you, they do not know where you are and cannot 'ping' you to find you. You send the logs in daily, or every couple days, just like paper logs. Do not confuse an ELD with the more familiar communication and data reporting units driver are familiar with such as Qualcom. There is no messaging function, no hard braking even recording, idling, speed, etc.. And to be clear NONE of those things are written into any of the electronic log requirements. Each of those items is something that a company implements for fleet management purposes. So far Mercer has committed to only meeting the requirements of the forthcoming requirements and no more. As stated in their letter, everyone will have to be on the system and we have fallen behind our peer group and are suffering in CSA scores.
It is everyone's hope that with documentation of delays at shippers and receivers the detention issue can be addressed more fully. Whether that happens, and how long it may take, is anyone's guess.
I've been on the ELD for over a year and have not taken any hit on productivity, but I ran legal before that so there's no real change. If you want to move your hours around, that's just not going to work. The last couple months my rate per mile has been the highest in the last five years. There are several drivers here who have learned to run less miles and make more money, but it does take some time to learn how to do it.
I can answer a lot of the questions about the ELD, PM me or ask here if it's a question that everyone would be interested in. -
So if you spend 3 hours at a shipper, can you put half hour loading and the rest off duty to save on your 70?
