I always put together 2 LTL's an get out. It's the only way I've been able to find good rates out of Los Angeles area

1.78 a mile off the west coast might be great but off the east coast, I think sucks.
Wide loads may not be hard but it is little more work and little more equipment and takes more time to run. Well out west, you can run afterdark.

Now sitting at home, tinkering with my truck.
Hope your guys get home in time for Thanks Giving.

I was in houston,tx today at texas pipe seen five mercer trucks there soon as I pulled in I went to the front of the line so never got to BS with any of them but for that many mercer trucks means they do have freight going somewhere

my 11'7" load turned out to be 11' 9.5" when i got there. couldnt get permits cause the local office is closed on friday. i cancelled the load and took the tonu pay. thought it was over for any hopes of getting home for thanksgiving but at 4:45 the sacremento agent called me asking if i could do this load for him. my tarp preference is set to 6' in the computer but i do carry 8'drops. this is a three stop load. tarped 9'2" high. legal dimensions and paid $.25/more then the wide load on more miles. drop in albaturky then two drops in dallas. he didnt have to beg much but i had to make him squirm a bit for the heck of it.
so i ran to long beach and loaded it. these guys have a cool way of tarping because its four seperate cnc machines so there is space between each and you cant get on top. in fact you can only secure the pallets to the deck. but you roll out the tarps on the ground and they get two huge fork lifts to scoop them up. they tie rope to the outer corner for the far side. they hold them way up over the load and you pull the rope to drop the far side then they back.out and that drops the near side. all you have to do is hang some tarp straps.

heck i wish all tarp jobs were that easy.

Don't you wish all days went that well. And just think, if you stayed with the wide load, you'd still be waiting on a change of permits.
I'm actually surprised they let you have tonu pay if just because of lack of permits. I've seen other guys having to sit and wait on permits.

it wasnt just permits. i booked a 6' tall load which was two of these units. when i got therr i was told he is paying for a whole truck and would put whatever he wants on it. that sent me into orbit. i topd them i wasnt hauling it unless they paid more and they refused. i only took it for that cheap because it was only 10k lbs. he was talking more then double that since he underquoted the weight to begin with. there was just a lot of little reasons. but personally as soon as i was told i have no choice what goes on my truck it was over for me

Agreed.... you did the right thing for sure. I've had a few shippers load me, then "add" more freight on and I tell them to wait a minute, I contracted for X amount of units and weight, and they give you the run-around about "truckload" and they ship what they want. I've had numerous times that I've had the customer remove the product and I've left. Just mark that customer on your do not-haul list.
