kjoseph, no one is against you for saying anything. I think though what the agent might have meant is it isn't mercer trucks going after those loads but other companies coming to the shipper with a lower rate to get freight.

most folks always put the blame on brokers and agents for cutting freight rates and pocketing the money, they act as if a shipper is mindless idiot who has no sy in what he pays to ship product. all the blame goes on agents and brokers for some reason.

That was all I was trying to say, an influx of available units precipitates a general fall in a freight rate.

The word example is just that, a example, but 7 will work just like 10 did. You might be reading what people are writing but apparently you are not comprehending it, because not one person complained about what a agent makes. I could care less what a agent makes. You asked why a agent would cut rates, and I provided you a logical reason, to net more revenue by moving more loads!!

One person relayed what he was told by a agent about rates, you insist he didn't hear what he heard.

I've watched posted loads go up and down by quite a bit and it's getting more frequent, you insist I don't see what I see.

Apparently Scaterboy, you believe that you have the ability to control what freight is offered to you by "working smarter". This is by far the most comical part of what you write. You have absolutely nothing more figured out, or any more control over what is offered, than anyone that commented!! Mercer has made it so simple there isn't a lot to figure out! Everyone looks at the same board, everyone is first in first out. Although there is the option to book from outside the Mercer board, for the most part we are looking at the same pool of stuff. So you can save the I work smarter stuff for the guys & gals in orientation!

I haven't read anyone complaining about poverty on here, we are just commenting on what we see! Nobody is suggesting doom & gloom either, just commenting on what we see!

I believe what Skateboardman was trying to point out about "working smarter", is not ONLY about freight rates...

It also means where the BEST freight lanes are during each part of the year.. Also means where to buy fuel, save those big checks you get, for slim times when the freight slows.. Keep your equipment in good order instead of sitting in a truck stop lounge area... FAR more to owning a trucking business than just what the next load pays..

We had O/O's that received those BIG checks, only to spend it on chicken lites, fancy chrome, etc....
they forgot to save a rainy day fund, for big breakdowns, or in the slow times...

If I were still trucking today, Skateboardman would be someone that I would take advice from.. I retired from trucking, but like to keep my mind from wasting away from ole age... This board keep me outa trouble from the better half...
Mercer would be in the top three companies I would lease too... Was leased to International Transport, to me, the top open-deck carrier in its day until Schneider bought them out...

Touché. I take advice from anyone and everyone and filter it through IQ and common sense. Again my op never said a word about my income or bashing mercer and my income. I say again I love it here. As far as working smart, freight lanes, time of year, rates, it sounds wonderful and it is, although that is less than trucker 101, it used to be implicit when someone became an oo, not so much with the ease of "ownership" anymore. This topic has me so worn out I'm going to play at least 36 holes a day this weekend starting right now. You men hold down the fort.

I'm sure some people appreciate his help, but that's not what he was doing. A couple people came on a Mercer thread, and commented on what they saw or heard. Nobody said they were broke, mad, sitting still, that a conspiracy was happening, that they don't know how to run, ect.. He actually agrees that rates out of a specific place were low, but then he suggested a person didn't hear what he heard from a agent, and implied that the person was suggesting a agent was to blame, the person said nothing like that. I suggested that perhaps the decrease was do to guys that have to take freight, because they can't afford to wait, or because of a increase in Mercer trucks, he actually agrees by his "bingo we have a winner" comment, but somehow because I used "Mercer Trucks" rather than trucks, he took it as a shot at Mercer. See he is so intent on "defending", he missed what was said. The agent said, they have Mercer Trucks taking loads they never took before, so why offer x when they take it for y. Now if he took what was actually said, and applied it to comments that followed, he wouldn't be on here defending what doesn't need to be defended. But he and a couple of his supporters, assumed because people commented, that we all had a problem here at Mercer. I can't speak for everyone that commented, but I didn't see anyone "complaining" about Mercer. We were simply commenting on what we have observed, & this is a thread about Mercer so it's a appropriate place to comment.

Many of us have owned trucks 25 30 35 years. Rates go up and they go down. The ones that don't learn how to work smart, will have a very hard time and many will go under. Sometimes this down turn last several years.

I still don't understand how this turned to a "work smart" and rates go up and down and people go under seminar. The op was about an anecdote from ONE person and had zero to do with money and finances for any individual. Great day this thing went sideways.
