Taylor and Spyder you both have very good points, I mostly agree with you but I have had a very few times where a low paying load worked, part of this mentality is probably where I drive now, just one more reason to head towards mercer and not have to deal with low rates

Memphis, while no single company is perfect for everyone, you will find the vast majority of us that have been with Mercer a while, are extremely happy that we made the decision to come here. Basically, the company is what you make it to be. They have their system or working things, you can learn to thrive in that system, or you can constantly be at odds with it.
For example, like everyone, we have strong areas and weak areas. The west coast is pretty weak for us. If you aren't gonna be happy unless you are running California every week, this isn't the company for you.
Also, they encourage you to be in complete control of your operation. No one will ever tell you you need to take a load. And no one will ever tell you not to take a load. If you end up in a bad area, the only one to blame is yourself.
As for that buck forty freight, while I completely disagree with you, if it works for that's all that matters. I'd be happy to buy you lunch one day and try to convince you that you are hurting yourself, but at the end of the day, you are the captain of your ship and the only opinion that matters regarding your operation is your own.memphis jack Thanks this. -
I've read most of this thread, I might have missed a few things, but that's one thing that draws me to mercer is calling all my shots, I don't have that now and I should, considering I'm the one paying to truck bills, I'm not worried bout running cali, I got a 07 and I much prefer the southeast to midwest. I live in western montana now and I'm constantly hauling lumber grossed to 80k for 1.31 a mile from Idaho to Ohio just so I can leave house after hometime. Somethings gotta change.... hopefully a switch to mercer will be the positive change I need

Montana is not a good place for mercer, Hell, I don't know anyone that has good paying freight there. you will have to make sure you get very good money coming home, cause you are either bouncing to salt lake, or leaving cheap. Another option, and what I would do if I lived there, is leave the truck at the yard and fly home.

Simple or maybe not so simple question. How do they figure out the area thing. Like if your number 5 in an area. How does the area get broken down

It goes by how each individual driver has their preferences set. For example, some guys never get offered any load over 44k lbs cause they gave their coordinator a max weight of 44k, so they don't get matched to a load that is 44,001 lbs. Others say no tarp, or only 4ft tarp. Maximum deadhead, etc etc. it can seem confusing cause you might be number 7 on one load, and number 57 on another loading at the same shipper. But it's really simple, it all boils down to the preferences you have your coordinator set.
