Almost every rooftop unit has optional heat strips. They generally require much more power (wattage) to operate than the AC unit which has its initial peak amperage draw to start the compressor motor, then requires as much as 1/3 that power for continuous operation. The amount of fuel consumed to power electric heating elements is far more costly than a dedicated heating unit like the Espar or Webasto. That said, if your generator will power it is is good to have installed even if you use the Espar style unit, then you have a backup. My Honda EU-2000 for example will NOT power the heating strips, it overloads the capacity of the generator, but it will power the AC unit just fine. When I used a small portable ceramic electric heating unit my fuel consumption was between 3-4 hours per gallon. Running the Espar my max is 1.6 gallons per 24 hours if running flat out the entire time. I would have to have the windows open and a fan to tolerate how hot that would get. Choices are go cheap, or spend a little more for a well thought out system that delivers be best efficiency for the two different requirements, cooling and heating. Doing it right will quickly return your investment with maximum long term savings.
Advantages to doing this vs an APU is that each component can be easily replaced by a mechanically competent driver. I realize that seems to eliminate the majority these days, those that have to go into the shop to get a light fixed for instance. I replace my generator once a year, yes it's a Honda and costs about $1000. I can easily sell it for $700-750 since it retains value unlike a Harbor Freight special that may at times only last a few weeks. When its friggin cold like -20, or 100+ outside you want things to work! -
Could a man make a decent living and run through the house on the weekends in arkansas and how are the elogs working out

Just curious why you don't lease on to Oakley seeing as you live right in their back yard?
