Since I started here I have only been on the road about 60 % of the time. I've taken a few vacations and typically go home for 2 weeks at a time. I'll have to look but I doubt I've stayed out for mor then three weeks at a time except one LTL load from !?$& but even that I took 5 days at home in the middle.

CJ you are definitely right, that's why I always preface my comments that this only pertains to the van side. There is no comparison at all between van and flat.
duddie Thanks this. -
Did my Louisville inspection this week, passed on1st time. loaded back home out of Covington,Ky to Franklin,Pa. From Cincy to Lodi truck traffic was like a holiday. That's highly unusual for any day of the week. Watching truck traffic, seems to me everyone's slow.
Shippers start out with the cheapest carrier and when they can't cover the load move up to the next highest priced carrier and so on.
Freight's slow and when it slows down rates go down as well.
Been that way since I've been doing this. That being said, Skateboardman last year, when I was watching the thread to come over, was running his brains out and didn't want to go home b/c rates were so good and loads were everywhere paying really well. this year it's slow and he's doing better than last year. I'm doing fine as well. I do things when it's slow I wouldn't ordinarily do, like go to the city. two grand out of Cleveland, guess i'm going to the city. Six months to a year before the media starts talkin about a slowdown we're already feeling it. trucks are the canaries of the economy.
As for trailers, I don't think Mercer's deal is bad at all. try and get a used one and by the time you pay it off, you'll know if you want some other type or brand.
I've owned my own since 1988. I've rolled over and over the authority thing. I don't care whose name's on my door or that it isn't mine. Unless you have a customer that pays really well and timely, I can't see running you own numbers. I got enough to do as it is without jerkin around with tax forms sending out freight bills chasing money and all the other crap for a few pennies more. let Mercer handle that stuff. without a customer your going to have the headaches and be able to what, haul for mercer and landstar too? um, not for me.
I've also noticed there seem to be a lot of guys that don't seem to have a lot of truck mechanical ability. Mercer seems to me like a company out of the past where everyone's willing to help you out. Take advantage of it. The older experienced drivers are a wealth of knowledge and seem to enjoy passing it along.
I knew a guy that worked here once that said it's truckin for dummies. A take on the fill in the blank for dummies thing. I like it here. All I have to worry about here is makin sure my tarps aren't flappin. oh, and fillin in the "bubbles" now... daggon circles..
Ok, light me up guys!!...Ok big boy, larry2903 and CJndaTruck Thank this. -
