I think part of the problem is a lot of us, pull stepdecks and when freight slows down for the winter, that is when it hurts the stepdeck guys more. Mercer has always had alot more flatbed freight but most new guys want to pull step.
Many times I wish I had a flat, but my step is paid for and I really do not want payments again. Besides a have a very custom 07 step.

i was looking at your ladder at the yard. wish i had one yesterday
Flightline Thanks this. -
I beleive the one you seen at the yard was my first version but only tall enough for the step. My second in the picture will work for the upper or lower deck.
I never realize how handy it would be till I built it. Well worth the money if you see one out there. I think I've seen a few places that sell similiar versions.
Anything to make things easier.
I've also used it to get to the front top of the load for putting on a smoke tarp. -
yep, i like his ladder. hope to get one or make one this year. but my six foot step ladder help a lot, an 8 foot might work better with a step on some of theigher loads.
and that extendable corner protector pole helps out a lot more than putting on corner protectors, i use it to roll out tarps, spread tarps from the ladder without climbing on top. it will feed straps thru freight, etc. 39.00 but well worth itFlightline Thanks this. -
flightline, could ya share what you used to build it, or a closer up picture. or are ya going to sell the blueprints or patent it and sell it at the company store.
come to think of it , make up a few and sell em at the store, serious not kidding about that.Flightline Thanks this. -
if ya hang around here a while you can work a triangle a little better , you just have to find the corners of the triangle that have fairly consistent freight to the other corners of your triangle. chicago area is a decent corner for a triangle -
i believe he built it from 1" square steel.
im more the build it yourself type guy too. mabey i should buy a new tig and build them out of aluminum and sell -
I talk to the bank last week I'm going to see if they will loan me some money for a flatbed I love my stepdeck but there are 5 x 1 flatbed loads over step and I have ramps and levelers for mine
I tell you one thing I have noticed is most the loads on the open boards brokers put 48,000lbs on about everyload that's when it's better to know what it is they have to haul but even sometimes I'm wrong but I'm right more than I am wrong no I don't like to haul heavy but sometimes you have to in order to move out of a erea most flatbed loads I see are 48,000lbs 46,500 is my max -
I've never really noticed flatbed loads being the full length of the trailer. That's the reason I thought a step deck would be a batter choice. I thought the tall loads would make up the difference, but I would rather run LTL. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to only run from Mercer's load board.
