17.50 per mile ain't bad and 40 bucks per hour ain't bad niether. Even if somebody did do better this one time that some guy I know overheard a friend talk about on the phone once.

So do you van guys have to carry lots of straps and blankets and pads and whatnot, for when you pull vanloads of forklifts and such?

$40/hr is horrible for an o/o. On a 12 hr day that's only $480. I don't get out of bed for that.

As someone already said, $40 is horrible. $75-$100 an hour, which is $750-$1000 a day on 10 hours should be your minimum. That's why I said I wouldn't touch some of those short loads. Anything under 300 miles & I don't even look at the $ per mile. It's a useless number on those low miles.

Mercer wants you to have 16 ratchet straps & they can be bought from Mercer at orientation. They will even let you have them deducted out of your settlements over the course of a month I think. I know you can have them deducted but not sure on the time frame. No blankets or pads needed. Mercer doesn't have any of that freight & most of the agents aren't interested in going to get it.

Congratulations. My scene is a little bit different. 21 months ago I was homeless, sleeping in the literally frozen parking lot of a Chicago truck driving school. Funny part was nobody knew I was a frozen homeless. They just thought I was was the first guy to class every day. Anyway 21 months later I've got several stocked bank accounts and a truck, and put myself in a position to be able to sign on to a job like yours. My low cost of living meant I could learn on the fly and make expensive mistakes, such as spending over 10 grand fixing the stuff that was wrong with this truck when I got screwed over buying it 6 months ago, while still making the payments and everything else too. So yeah, if I have to choose between 480 bucks and staying in bed, I'll take the 480 bucks. Heck I still pick up pennies lying on the ground, but that's as much to remind myself where I been as for the 18 bucks an hour it pays.

Congrats on bettering yourself. That's a great story.

But here's the deal, by hauling for $40 an hour that keeps the rates down. The load I pick up this morning I initially turned down. Agent asked if I wanted more money. I said no, I don't want to go to that area. Not 5 minutes later I called my coordinator about another issue & after our discussion he told me about the same load but now the money was $300 higher. I ended up taking it even though I didn't want to go to the area cause it will be a good weekend run. My point, that's what happens when we turn down freight that just pays ok.

Now here was my screw up (I'm still new at this) instead of telling my coordinator I would take it I should've called the agent back & told them I wanted another $500 & I would go. Probably wouldn't have got all $500 but they would've come up more than likely. Those are the parts of this gig that I'm not used to. 97% of my loads I'm good with the pay.

Hold up a sec here. I didn't know the Mercer gig had these. Honestly that's one thing I've been hoping for is some experience dealing with them before I get my own authority. We didn't have them at Interstate. Strictly a closed system: click to self-dispatch, or don't. How do they fit into the Mercer scene?

Yep. Mercer has agents. 90% of my freight comes from 2 of them.

when you run van do you have the option to by a van from Mercer or, do they only rent? Not that I want to change over. I'm just curious.
