To the new drivers reading this. Here's how I see it, (not that anyone really cares but since this is a forum I enjoy reading and it's free) the main difference between Per Diem and straight pay is the taxes paid from your paycheck into your account with the federal government. Less will be paid into that account if your on Per Diem. How much you have in your account will determine how much you will draw out in the form of social security when you retire. (yes, there will be SS when you retire.)
Per Diem gives you all the major holidays paid and (at least a couple of years ago) you would get .03 cents for a safety bonus where straight pay only got .01 cent on all miles safely driven. Along with a vacation after 6 months that all sounds good and it is good but something to think about. Since your a new driver and your first year is mostly about learning how to do your job the way Millis wants you to. Everyone makes mistakes and when you make a mistake with an 18 wheeler its probably going to cost money. Depending on how much damage was done, guess what. You just lost .03 cents of your pay for the year. Straight pay only .01.
Now if you start out with Per Diem and after a year or so then decide to go straight pay you will have to go an entire year again without a paid vacation. Correct me if I'm wrong but Isn't your vacation on Per Diem based on how many miles you've driver up to that point? After 6 months I wouldn't think a person would rack up that many miles to get much paid toward a paid vacation. Again, I'm not sure about that.
Just remember, this is the way I see it and everyone has their own opinion and there all right. To each his own.

Hey, I am in sort of the same boat. Same age except my kids are still elementary age. I was IT for a long time and now I'm going for it in trucking. I have already been to school but delayed leaving for a job due to the holidays looming only two weeks after graduating. How are things going for you now? What advice could you give me with 6 months in? Thanks!

I'm getting 2800-3200 most weeks. Theyve kept me moving except when I end up in GA on a weekend like right now lol. Freight in GA sucks right now but still have 2900 right now while sitting waiting for load.
Ok never met instructor in Eden but I've heard good things bout him. The training here is really good and most trainers are as well -
