I haven't even started Swift yet, and already hate Elogs just from reading about them.

Just finished the class a little while ago. Regarding Line 5 Personal Conveyance, that is limited to going home and for only 50 miles maximum. In other words both those parameters must be in place to use it. That severely limits us O/O's who are routinely thousands of miles from home.
It was a useful tool a few times when I was running up against the clocks, I would drop and bobtail out off duty driving perfectly legal (or so I thought) then return for an empty later.
Instructor was telling us about a dedicated account O/O who would travel 52 miles from the distribution center where he was based to Lancaster TX to pick up his personal vehicle, and then drive home for his hometime. When audited he was busted bigtime on his logs. He wasn't bringing the truck home on Line 5 and broke the 50 mile barrier.Last edited: Jan 5, 2012
Cochise Thanks this. -
50 miles is a company policy. I would probably be the one challenging that. Heh...
scottied67 and Cochise Thank this. -
I did question it one time, and lost the battle, also they say that it is 50 miles from your home terminal. Supposedly if I drop in Columbus and BT home on line 5, 40 miles, that is a no no. This has to be a company policy.

I am not going to drive on duty when I'm bobtailing from where I dropped my trailer to the house. Nor am I going to leave my truck anywhere but in the driveway when I'm home. The Safety dude and I may wind up having a few discussions.
scottied67 and Cochise Thank this. -
And until someone tells me otherwise I will drop, bobtail to the T/S and then back later to P/U an MT on OD also.scottied67 and Injun Thank this. -
There's really not THAT much to hate about e-logs. A log is a log! What you will come to hate is the whole "1984 Big Brother" routine and the rather draconian way things are enforced. I was never quite sure if I was following the rules or not 'cause I couldn't ever seem to get a straight answer as to exactly what the "rules" were!!!!! Ask three different people who are supposedly in a position to know and you'lll get three different answers. Good luck. -
I come from the Fire Alarm/Camera industry. Have to deal with Fire Inspectors aho all have different opinions. Get specs from one, install it, another comes by and tells ya to rip it all out and install it a different way. Fines and permits every day. So, Maybe I'm used to it. I just wanna haul freight, keep to myself as long as I get miles. I just want to run like hell.

I wish you well. They say you can get used to hanging if you hang long enough!
As for "... run[ing] like hell" I wouldn't get too caught up in THAT fantasy if you're going to be driving for Swift. Work is pretty steady ... but you do it at their pace ..... which is sometimes 'glacial.' On the plus side ... you will usually (not always) be given a "delivery window" that will be large enough to provide some flexibility. A 12 to 24 hour window is not unheard of.Cochise Thanks this.
