I heard that if you simply renew your CDL every four years you have to take the written tests if you had any tickets. Where are you moving to?

Most states will issue you a new one straight across provided the current isn't expired. All states will make you re-certify for hazmat though which means paying for the fingerprints again. The DMV may or may not make you take hazmat portion of the written test again...depends on the state. Ive done this in Oregon, Washington, New York and New Jersey.

I'm planning on putting everything in storage and living OTR for a year or two. Not sure where I'm going to move. Possibly Northwest Indiana but, I've been looking online at property in Montana and South Dakota I'm tired of the city life.

And although I have lived in Illinois my whole life I've never had a CDL from here. I use a family members address in Indiana so I couldn't tell you how the renewal works.

With all the fly by night CDL training programs I see around here I'm surprised getting a CDL here is as difficult as people say.

I think it all stemmed from the DMV corruption scandal in the mid 90's. Good on you for wanting to get out of Crook County. My only regret is not doing it sooner.

Ya it stemmed from that along with the governor George Ryan who went to prison for the license for bribe scandal. Where did you live in cook county?

Yeah Illinois is one of the worst. In fact I've heard from a number of people the seemingly make it harder on transfers than new applicants. California is for the most part the same way. If you do move in state I would recommend using a DMV outside major cities, the pass rate is much higher. Hence the reason a number of schools are running all the way to Rockford to test students rather than using Chicagoland DMV's.

Another thing you need to worry about is if you have your Haz-Mat. When I switched from GA to KY, I just got my background check about 10 months prior to the move and I had to retest the hazmat and pay for another background check because my previous background for GA didn't cover the total amount of time needed for my KY license. So on top of it all, I had to take my endorsement test and repay $110 background check fee.
