I usually start at 0915 on Mondays, 1045 rest of week, and am home anytime from 1830-2230 depending on the days. I run a mix of P&D and shuttle some trailers to different plants or DC's. Don't really care for dock work though, told my boss straight-up I didn't get a CDL to drive a forklift, but it is part of the job and what I signed up for to get me home everyday. If I had to pick, I'd take P&D over linehaul. Just like to stay on a day schedule if I have my choice.

    yep

I haul containers, my day starts anywhere between 1am and 7 am and lasts 10 to 12 hrs, been doing it for 16 yrs, does that count as enough exp. to agree with his comments?

Its not a visual issue, but an awareness one. My brain has no stimulation and so I get drowsy within 200-300 miles to a point where I deem it unsafe to drive.

No matter how you cut, you are better off NOT driving any type of vehicles for a living. By your own admission, you are NOT safe to yourself or other people with your night driving problems.Do yourself a favor and turn in your CDL. Get on with some other line of of work that does NOT involve any type of driving whatsoever. You will be saving both your own life and that of others.

    Good luck to you!

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Sorry, but that's not happening. Having issues driving a 10+ hr shift through the dead of night would matter a whole lot more if, I don't know, I was looking for a night gig. I don't see how that has any affect on a day gig. Especially seeing as how different P&D is to OTR driving. EVEN IF, P&D was a graveyard gig it still wouldn't be an issue due to how active that type of work is.

So sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree.

Haha, true true. I actually enjoy dock work. On paper, P&D seems like its more my type of work too. I'd much rather be able to get out of the truck now and again and actual do some manual labor. Along with being home every day, and maybe even making some buddies with places you deliver/pu from. I'm sure you probably could make some enemies pretty fast there too lolol.

Do you unload the majority of your freight? How often do you deliver to a warehouse where its mandatory to use their unloading service? If you do deliver to one, do they take as long on LTL carriers as with OTR, or do they usually hurry up?

    Thx .

They don't want us anywhere more than 15 minutes, but if it's 20 or so, no big deal. Haven't had a lumper fee with P&D yet, and don't see it coming as we don't use comchecks or deal with many grocery places/freight. If I think it's gonna take too long for someone to get to me and I can get a dock, I'll pull the freight off and sign the bill and go...most of our customers are ok with it. Have definitely made a few friends so far, and probabaly some not so much, haha. Most places with more than 2 pallets will load/unload freight and we even have permission to use forklifts and electric jacks at some customers too.

I hear you about driving days. I absolutely HATE driving dayshift for linehauls. Unlike some of the other big LTL carriers, we work predominantly nights. Occasionally I get laid over after a long run and my ten puts my start somewhere when the stupid orange ball is in the sky. Believe it or not, even though I see more, it screws up all my landmarks and I almost find myself getting lost in the city trying to find a terminal I've been to a million times. Traffic is the worst... plus all the scales are open.

hate to break it though but there are a few jobs that are night P/D... Few companies have guys that start at 4pm or later as we got customers who take deliveries all night long

Right right. I'm assuming the majority of food service and P&D would be day shifts though. And I can always explain in my application that I'm looking for the day shift. I figure out of all the LTL and food services around me SOMEONE will want my sorry ### :)

Also like I explained earlier, as active as you P&D drivers are Im sure I wouldn't have issues pulling night shifts in that department. Linehaul would be a different story.

    o_O ???

I thought 90% of linehaul was at night. And the only day gigs were bids that only the vets had?

FXF runs their trucks 24 hours a day. We also have some day shift line drivers and nighttime P&D drivers.
