Here's one for you...
I don't see anything in the regulations, unless I'm missing something. A former coworker just messaged me: "Question. You're on a 4 lane city road, 2 lanes each direction. You have hazmat so you're going to stop at a railroad crossing. Is it a law or just common courtesy to stop in the right lane? Does it make a difference if you stop in the left before crossing the tracks?"
Me: "I'm not sure. I think it's definitely preferable to stop in the right lane. Have you tried looking it up yet?"
He responded: "No I haven't. I ask because I stop in the left lane because I need to be in the left lane later on and 4Wheelers generally dint want to give room."
Anyone got the skinny on this?

Oops..We’re supposed to stop at railroads?
Streetroddreams, austinmike and Studebaker Hawk Thank this. -
IMO, The general rule for two or four lane RR X is to stop, then proceed while remaining in the same gear when placards are on the vehicle. Unless signs state no trucks in left lane, it shouldn't be a violation.

That's what I'm thinking, too, although my preference is still to use the right lane, then move over once I cross.DustyRoad Thanks this.

Lane really doesn't matter, as long as it isn't restricted. If he's going to be turning left soon, that's probably the lane he ought to be in. Seems more dangerous to stop in the right lane, ease across the tracks, force your way into the left lane (because everyone is trying to go around you) only to stop in that left lane to make the turn.

True, depending on traffic flow, I guess. Heavier traffic, I would probably opt for the left lane, although I haven't ever had to as of yet.NavigatorWife Thanks this.

Lane does not matter. Stop the #### thing.
YOU are however thinking ahead. There are some situations where it's best to be positioned for a problem coming up after the immediate problem of RR tracks.
Theoratically you can cross a interstate on grade with rr tracks and I'll stop it there in the hammer lane. People will die running into my Decap bar. But I will by gawsh be legal HA...NavigatorWife and DustyRoad Thank this.
