Many of you know that I got my CDL. I decided to give it up because no one would hire me. From what I’ve heard, the industry is still in the crapper and companies are still being very picky. I was told by one very good company that I have to wait until May of next year in order to get on with them.
in the meantime, I am looking for just plain local jobs that do not revolve around driving. Is there work in Florida for non-CDL drivers besides the moving van industry and expedited vans? The moving industry didn’t pan out well for me and left me a sour taste. I’m talking about getting your passenger endorsement and driving a charter bus or a straight truck that doesn’t require a CDL?
I don’t want to give up my disability because the Health insurance is way too good and unless I find a job paying 60 grand a year or more, it isn’t worth me giving it up. Even then, I would have to face a lot of decisions because I would have to get Health insurance and probably come out right at 50 grand a year. That isn’t too bad if it’s doable.
finally, I found out from a good reliable source that if you have your CDL class A in Florida or voluntary gave it up and it has not expired, you can go to the DMV and take the passenger endorsement exam and get your passenger endorsement. I’m curious if anyone knows if this is true and come back up my information. The DMV says it’s true yet. Sage says it’s not meaning Sage Truck Driving School.
thanks for all your help and I’m sorry I have been away. I’ve just been trying to survive doing odds and ends.

I would be careful giving up your disability benefits though; may be next to impossible to get them reinstated.nextgentrucker and CalculatedRisk Thank this. -
If your CDL was less than 1 yr old, I think you can get it re-instated easily.

Been quite a few years since I’ve been there but always thought about driving one of their tour buses on a semi retired basis. Not even sure if they still do them but would be a cool gig for someone in your situation. Last time I was there for a space shuttle launch.CalculatedRisk Thanks this. -

Did you apply to your local transit authority? Most of them are hurting for drivers, they will help you get your passenger endorsement, and the health insurance is generally pretty good.
I already had my A when I applied to the transit authority years ago. I still had to go through their driving course, and take a road test in a bus.
I got my passenger endorsement, and a restriction for "no Class A bus", and kept my Class A.
Good luck. -
