There are three companies near me, the pay is extremely low though, I believe it’s $18/hour once you’re actually driving.

well, 18$ aint bad we all gotta start somewhere most your pay hits when you go past 40 hours if your hourly that OT is where it happens I am in the oil field. I got 85 hours last week and this week average will be 15-hour days and Friday will likely be 16 thats gonna be light days. We have one worker who averages 18-20 hours he doesn't do much driving as he does standing around watching others. Road construction, logging some companies who work during night will you will get some mad hours if you have a road construction company nearby maybe try them too? A lot people start as labor turn to CDL drivers ain't nothing wrong with this more over they likely have manuals vs autos meaning no restrictions like most of these megas give people say it is not a big deal which aint until you want local and the only companies around have only manuels then you are SOL. anyways wish you luck

On 40 hours 18 doesn't seem to great but I'm certain you'll be getting some decent overtime. That'll bring it up substantially.

I know everyone told you to wait a year because of the economy and you were smart to do so. Problem is the economy still hasn't improved.

I'd focus on local work (like hauling logs) if I were you. Getting paid by the hour with OT over 40 is way better then giving your labor away for free doing mileage, load or percentage pay.

You end up working for free too much in those living in the truck situations.

Also, most large trucking companies don't like to hire drivers in bad freight areas. You happen to live in one. Franklly, of there are only truly three places to drive for in your area you should move or seriously reconsider your career choices.

If there's logging there should be other equipment to operate as well like lowboys for moving equipment, dumps for moving material and operating machinery like dozers and excavators can pay well too. With a class A and some determination you should be able to handle all of those.

I would add consider buying a RV or something if you can that way you can go where the work is whenever and vaction elsewhere with it don't need buy a new one I would suggest a RV before covid hit because they were built slightly better...

Prime is more selective than other megas. They may just reply later than the others because they are so big.

RVs are cardboard held together with staples and covered by aluminum siding. Only buy a used RV. Most are bought new, go to 2 locations in the first year, and then get parked for years.

Ask those companies to have a current driver employee call you to discuss the company. Ask those drivers "how much did you earn last week?" "How many hours did you work last week?" Etc. Do not ask "is this a good company?" "do you make good money?" "do you like your schedule?" What they consider good may not be what you consider good.

buying a pre covid one would be used most likely like I suggested the newer ones during covid had even worse builds ever thats from a few of the manufacturer employees. He said honestly the best one hes said only a few are good gems he pointed out the old Toyota rvs said they were built well. But the major problem was the dually and how it was done determined if was a good one or bad one. they are relatively cheap but most are needing remodel due being old but those engines those Toyotas lasted a long time.
