It is not my intentions to be an A Hole...I actually do want to help you. Review that post by @blairandgretchen. Are you an owner op or company driver? If you are a company driver, you want to follow @kylefitzy. If you are an owner op, you want to follow @blairandgretchen.

Before you go looking at trailers and trucks, go to the picture thread and look at the trailers and trucks and find out the specs.

If you own a truck, lease on to a specialized company, (Palletized Transport, Midwest Transport, Perkins...etc) not a stick and brick hauler, and pull their trailer. They will usually have direct contracts that pay better than brokers.

    Trip planning.
First oversized...post here with all the important info on the load. Commodity, dims, weight, your empty weight and we will get you through. Promise.

Question for anyone that would answer....

I've got an opportunity to work for a large construction outfit around here. They're looking for a driver to move equipment from job to job.

I'd be running a daycab, home daily, hauling anything they could throw at me. The company does things by the book, no bootlegging, outlaw stuff.

I do have some experience hauling wide and tall stuff, never got into the heavy stuff though.

They're offering me $27 an hour to start, with full benefits ( Heath insurance, eye, dental,401k, 3 weeks vacation, three personal days, etc) from day one.

Good deal or not? Bear in mind I'd be running PA roads pretty much all the time.

Some folks don't know what hungry is.
You will never see me late to dinner.
If your paying I will eat by your rules. Just be prepared to foot my bill. I like steak and spaghetti, and maybe some chocolate Canolli for dessert.
If networking don't help at least I got a full belly.
At least you tried to school the fool.

    @Humblepie

I may have typed to fast and gotten a head of myself.

I should have said i am thinking of skipping flatbed because of what my friends are telling me.

Thank you for pointing that out and my apologies as it isn’t my intention to sound like a know it all. I just want to see if it’s worth my time to get into field that is currently going the way of the dry van market.

@TripleSix thank you. One question do you think this part of the industry will survive the influx of rate cutters and unskilled drivers or should I finish up my contractors license and get out?

Just heads up I was only going to do this for 5 years until my wife finishes up her studies but I have gotten to love the job and want to specialize in it instead of being a a run of the mill driver. So I was thinking Os/Ow as it requires skill to pull it off.

The young driver did pretty well as a company driver. He decided that the best way for him to become an owner operator is by doing a lease purchase. That was a mistake. He’s pissed at his dispatcher because every time he turns down a load, the dispatcher “forces” him to accept the load.

That doesn’t make sense to me. If there’s no forced dispatch, How is dispatch forcing you if you’re the one paying the bills?

Nice guy...doesn’t like to argue. So he gives in.

Why does he feel like he’s trying to avoid an argument? Nope don’t want it. Something better for me will come around. Nothing personal, just business. CLICK.

“But Six, I have a lease payment. I have to move.”

If you’re pulling loads just to move and make the lease payment, move according to the locations of the receiver. Stay in the freight lane. If you are pulling loads just to pay a truck payment and the location is to a dead zone, you’re gonna go bust in a month. Maybe less. Huge mistake. Common mistake.

On this I must respectfully disagree.

In my experience any brain dead idiot can drive the likes of a 963 Cat loader on a lowboy, throw a chain over the bucket and bind the tracks, and haul ### down the road. Now on one of TMC’s Lowes loads on the other hand, where they’ll throw anything and everything on the trailer in God only knows what order, I think a new driver would be totally lost on how to strap down a mess like that, and that doesn’t even include trying to tarp it.
