Hey guys, I was an O/O until 2002. After that I ran Florida only for 6 years pulling oversized. Add in 1 year in 2012 as a yard dog. I'm looking to get back on the road but I'm running into a snag and being told I have to go to a truck driving school for an 80 hour refresher course ($2k to $4k). I've considered buying another truck and leasing on but the same issues. Seems like the only people willing to take me on are companies that will 'put me through their school' and require a contract, or doing a lease purchase, which is out of the question. I want to get back into flatbeds and eventually back into oversized/specialized. Any advice out there? Thanks in advance.
New Old Driver, where do I go?

1st question: where are you located? Give us a zip code....&/or name of county & state.
For modern-day insurance purposes...if it's been more than 5 years since you drove -- you'll have to start over.

Have you talked with this FL-based flatbed carrier...if not, I'd start there:
Cypress Truck School Jacksonville, FL | Paid CDL Training
&/or
CDL Flatbed Jobs in Orlando, FL & Nearby Cities | Cypress
If you still have a CDL -- they may put you to work....or send you out with a trainer for a few weeks, 1st.
Inquire within, for details.
Keep us posted here on the Forum...on how it goes....

Cypress is about the only flatbed company that hires that far south in Florida.
Yes, Cypress Truck Lines does hire Space Coast drivers. They are actively seeking drivers for various
positions, including local, regional, and OTR (OwnerOperator Repossessed) roles. The company offers
training programs for new drivers and provides opportunities for those looking to join their team.cwcajigas Thanks this. -
If your CDL expired you have to go back through a certified CDL school. I just finished doing that process as my CDL had been expired for more than 5 years. It felt weird going through a CDL school with newbies as I knew what they were teaching but I was able to help the other students with manual shifting and other class related topics. The instruc

The instructors only taught enough to teach the students to get their CDL and nothing else. So I recommend to just go through a CDL school and I found an organization to pay for my school so I was only out the cost of the DOT physical and the cost of the permit tests.

@supersnackbar is one of several very knowledgeable flatbed Forum members here....who can likely advise you with who to go/talk to, besides/beyond Cypress.
He will very likely advise you to bypass/avoid ALL the flatbed carriers owned by the Daseke, Inc parent company (poor management, basically).
