One move I did was from a 2-story home in California. The driver hired two lumpers and he supervised. He was very strict also with them. When the load arrived in Tennessee everything was there and no damages.

Another move was from Tennessee to Beijing, Mainland China. Hired Ellis Moving & Storage, Nashville, TN
Two guys showed up in a large box truck. Very professional and worked hard. In Beijing when the load arrived at my home, everything was there and no damages. The two drivers refused a tip because in China tipping is an insult.

I work for moving company. The lumpers that the drivers hire that deliver to our warehouse have been doing it for a long time. I’ve seen them offload right around 10,000 pounds and about an hour to an hour and a half tops. You have to have real long stamina and be fully hydrated.

there was one guy I worked with, and he was hard working and dedicated. Usually the furniture is wrapped in pads, and they are usually taped or different sizes of rubber bands used to hold the pads together.

my job at the warehouse where I work is to fold those pads together and to separate them. Our company owner has his own pad that he uses. he doesn’t even use tape on his pads because tape can tear up a pad if you don’t tape it properly.

last, but not least, you have your door jams, meaning pads that go against the frame of the doors so that you don’t scrape them or damage them. Moving business is a whole complicated thing. I feel blessed to have been exposed to it. Meaning learn what hard work really is.

Just to give you all an idea how much lumpers make. They usually charge $200 per person. If it takes them four hours to offload they still get the $200. They are usually 1099 contractors and take orders from a middleman who gets a cut just for booking them their jobs.
