Yes you are correct, I messed up the cold mode terminology. It does that right when you start it.

I don't know if there was a term for when the oil wasn't hot enough it would make the acert cough, sputter, smoke during acceleration?

Oh believe me I let my equipment warm up before I take off and especially let it cool down before turning the key off.

But on my acert on a cold morning I can let it sit idling at 1000 rpm till 150 water temp and somtimes, not all the time, I can hit the road and it will do that smoking/shuddering until I guess it feels it is warmed up and satisfied.

I know I have seen on this forum that other acert owners experience this so I'm just thinking that this is what is happening to the op's truck.

There are a number of C15's here that sound like ever start maybe their last. Do voltage drop tests, before replacing the starter. Put a Denso on, as Wore Out told me, and your problems are over. I don't thank he is hung up on that could be the only problem but mine don't smoke. Peace and good luck to all.

Youngsters learn to not idle (ever). We've all seen it, negative 5 outside, guy runs his bunk heater all night, gets up, turns the key and he's on the interstate 30 seconds later.... Makes me cringe.

I let it warm up for at least 20 minutes each day. And it's only been 30-40 degrees in the mornings. I just figures 140 to 150 was warm enough. Guess not.

Experts recommend just drving slow after start up, does the same thing as idliing but is more productive, and conducive to the warming up process.

i didn't finish, drive slow til the engine is properly warmed up then get up to legal speed.

I have found the best MPG's running about 52-53 miles per hour though.
