Years ago in another life I drove pile for a living. We had this young crane operator whose dad was king boss crane operator. This young kid would come in and fire up the old crane and immediately max idle it for half and hour before we were to go to work. We kept trying to tell him not to do that, finally complained to the master mechanic about it. As far as I know, the guy is still doing it to this day if he is still around.

Years ago in a another life I was a Master Mechanic for Associated Pipeline company. Had a driver in my truck when I was on a job. Kid wouldn't have lasted long if he done one of our booms that way.
Oxbow and scottied67 Thank this. -
No warmup time. Tell that to the power steering box on my pickup that decided to start leaking after that 1 day I slept in and had to rush to work at -37 outside. When it gets below zero, everything I own gets a minimum of 5 minutes idle time. -30 or colder its closer to 20 minutes of warmup time.
Oxbow, scottied67 and wore out Thank this. -
So you're the guy on the freeway going 30 till his truck warms up, then you go 53....? Of course Swift has to pass you at 61, and I run out of hours watching the slowest race in history.
Im the guy who starts his truck as soon as he gets near it, walks around kicking tires, checking tail lights etc... Jump in, kick the idle up to 1000, do my log book, paperwork etc,.... Get on the interstate and drive like a normal person. That $0.40 worth of fuel I wasted is the best investment I made that day.Roger McG Thanks this. -
A voltage drop test was suggested and should be done. Plus look at age of cables. And a oil sample on a engine with 8000 miles will have all kinds of stuff in it. Its still new. And warm them up. If mines loaded i warm it up to operating temp. Empty i might role at 140 or 150. Then drive easy for a while. Remember just because the engine is warm doesent mean the trans or rears are warm.
Guntoter Thanks this. -
IMO, Transmissions and Rears with full synthetic really don't need to be warmed up (unless you're in North Dakota). Engines have so many different types of metal, plastic, and carbon fiber material that make it very important for all of them to be the same (hot) temp. Ring and pinions are the same material so they expand at the same rate.
