As title says, 5th wheel handle not staying in open position when uncoupling from trailer. I have been using vice grips to hold open while disconnecting. Would a repair kit with the springs and jaws fix this issue? Thanks for your time and responses in advance.

look for a broken or missing spring under the front of the plate. Look at another 5th wheel.
dosgatos, Rideandrepair and tscottme Thank this. -
Do the jaws sometimes stay open, and the arm stay out? I'd first replace all the springs and see how it works then. I have the same problem that just came on, but it only happens when it's cold. 50°>, no problems. I've got a new spring kit and going to replace myself here in the next few days. I don't drop and hook. But it sucks at Walmart because they require drivers to disconnect during unloading.

Yes the jaws and latch stay open, when coupling latch wont stay open. Became a pain, lots of drop and hook. Thank you for the input, im going to try the repair kit, clean very well and regrease.

I would start with spraying WD-40 or PB Blaster underneath around all the pivot points and linkages. When opened one of the linkages is supposed to "fall" and keep the handle extended until closed. If there is a bunch of grease built up it could prevent that from happening.

Had the same problem I started using low temp grease it works a little better

When I had that problem, it was a broken spring.

I'm sure a combination of an old, week spring and the 5th wheel lube I use during the warmer months was the problem in my truck. I use Shaeffer's 5th wheel spray lube, and it's known for being problematic in cold temps.
