My first patrol car has a steady red bulb to the front on the drivers side, a flashing red bulb on the passenger side, a flashing amber light to the rear, and had a blue 4 light beacon in the middle. From there we went to Federal Sign and Signal AeroDynics, then came the Whelen Strobes, then the Federal LED's. Who knows what will be next, but I came from the school that if drivers are not paying attention it does not matter how many lights you have, or their color, they will hit whatever is in their way.

Big Don and Mike2633 Thank this.

I remember seeing pictures of the cars from the 1970s and they had the old Red bars all the way across. Then what sometime around 1991-1992 they switched to the slate color and went to the blue and red strobes which they had till 2003.
    This was late 1980's:

    Then this was 1997:

Then 2001(This was there sharpest scheme):

Then the 2003-2004 change this was the first year of the new Vista All brights and the white cars.

Then the Fords were discontinued by Ford and the Dodges came in which takes us to the present day.

Now this is 2011 which was the light bar transition period:

All the Crown Vics have been retired from the Patrols Fleet now.

Was this the light set up you were talking about on the old CHP slick tops?

I remember when the S.O. came out with the blue strobe bubble...i hated it and would make them turn them off when they arrived at my accident scenes...

    Mike2633 Thanks this.

It is interesting to see all the lights and markings and things especially on the older cars and how they have all evolved with time. Lot's of interesting lights and equipment back in the day.
All of them had different equipment and things that made them kind of uniquely there own which was the whole point. Like Pennsylvania back in the early 1980's with tail lights on the roof:

Today on my way home from work I saw they put up a flag on I-90 in Lakewood, Ohio right on the mile marker sign where yesterdays accident happened.

I always wished at night that they had a dimmer switch. They are awesome at daytime though.
