Unfortunately, you've already checked the only two places that will write a policy for you. Start thinking about ways to lower your premium or a Plan B.

From what I’ve heard, and I am only a looky Lou/shopper arounder at this point, the premium goes down as the authority ages. Unfortunately, it seems Plan B can only take affect once Plan A has run its course.

That's not necessarily the case. The agent I spoke with could quote me a reasonable rate IF I were running my own numbers, driving my truck. However, to run my friend's numbers in my truck, the rates got stupid. The problem? They don't like insuring small fleets looking to grow.

The other problem is the small number of companies issuing coverage. Even though there might be several out there, many are owned by the same parent companies and have non-compete clauses with each other, in that if you have a policy with one, you can't even get a quote from the other until the old policy has been terminated and no longer in effect for several weeks. If you're looking to switch insurance, that ties your hands because you've basically got to shut down your operation for a month in order to be able to shop the full market...and that insurance gap shows up when brokers and customers search your company with the feds...which could hurt you more than the stupid outrageous increase in the premiums. They sucker you in with a decent rate, then they've got you because you CAN'T shop around anymore.

    csmith1281 and DSK333 Thank this.

I'd be curious how this affects an intrastate operation and/or what insurance doors would open by leaving the FMCSA out of the mix.

I'm in my second yr with Progressive. They wrote my policy at the beginning of 2017 , they take on new enrollees one month and than the next they dont . I was paying around 1400 a month first year and now I pay 1000 a month in my second yr . I shopped around it was difficult , between truck down payment and insurance down payment for a first yr entrant you need some good funds in the bank .

That has got to be unconstitutional because it hinders interstate commerce.

I would get a kick out watching someone say that to state police! In theory your right, but in actuality, I don’t think it’s flying on our level. Though it would be nice to start playing that card

Not unconstitutional, no. The Sherman Act and Clayton Act are the two anti-trust laws that proscribe anti-competitive practices. However, the McCarran Ferguson Act exempts the Insurance industry from Federal regulation. So if the previous poster is correct and there is some kind of collusion between insurance companies to keep carrier insurance rates high, then this would only be illegal if a state law prohibited it.
