I've never personally had an issue near the border, but it does happen. When you leave Laredo, have you noticed how many cameras they have positioned to look under trailers? Illegals will occasionally crawl into the side skirt supports under trailers and stay there until you stop to fuel. Or they fall off and go under the wheels of your trailer. Hijackings of trucks isn't a big thing really, but robberies do happen. Truckers are known to carry emergency cash, and you're just a piggy bank in the eyes of an MS-13 ganger coming across the border. They probably won't kill you for it, if threatening is enough. Probably.

I took my rental car across at los Algodones 3 weeks ago. Was told I couldn't, needed mexican insurance, proof of ownership, title etc.
Drove up to the border and right on thru. No gate or staffed checkpoint or anything. Was like driving into Wisconsin.
Left 5 days later and gave US customs my passport card, global entry card and my twic card. He looks at me and asked if I had anything to declare and I said a bottle of tequila and some pain meds for mama's dental work. He said go on and have a nice day. Going back in October and bringing back more tequila. :)
An RV would be a tight fit.
I don't think you could fit a rig at that crossing.

The border is probably one of the more dangerous areas because of the drug traffic and border jumpers. The whole country isn't like that though. There are a lot of US, Canadian and European expats that live there and generally the consensus is that the dangers are over-hyped in the media. Part of the problem is the language and cultural barrier.
