been there, done that, got the t-shirt. next time you high-hitch a trailer, put some chocks or blocks under the landing gear to elevate the king pin over the fifth wheel. You can also add some dunnage under the back most portion of the fifth wheel to level it out.
as for your injuries, go see a doc. you may have sustained a serious injury which may hurt you in the long term if not treated.
Aside from that, get out and look to prevent this from happening again
ouch...

A 12 oz Coke can is also the perfect height to put under the fifth wheel to hold it flat. -
I don't know if it has been said yet, but...... FILE AN INJURY REPORT IMMEDIATELY, THEN GO SEE A DOCTOR! You have 24 hours to file an injury report for workers compensation (at least that is the law in Alaska - Don't know if your state is the same). If you are told not to seek medical attention, ignore them and document it. I hope the injury does not require surgery and you have a speedy recovery!

Would you ask a medical professional for trucking advice?

I was injured at work, thought all I did was smash the bejeezus out of my finger (the rest of my hand - not so bad), reported what happened to my employer and went back to work after cleaning the wound and finished out the day. The next day I went to a clinic, found out I fractured my finger and crushed a nerve. During treatment I complained about a terrible pain radiating throughout my arm, I was told repeatedly that it was "referred pain", I knew that was BS, but you cannot MAKE anyone listen.
I returned to work and did nothing overhead, all work was below shoulder level, my employer was helpful and understanding in dispatching my work load. After having the splint removed a month later, I accepted a job that required overhead work...... I ended up on the floor in AGONY, twice. What had happened when I smashed my hand other than fracturing it and smashing the nerve was, I basically tried to tear my arm off and had no idea..... "referred pain" MY ###! I tore the labrum in 3 places, tore two rotator cuffs - one 60% through, separated my clavicle, had two surgeries, two MRI's, developed adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), had months of PT, came out of the second surgery with a debilitating neuropathy and 5 anchors to hold the damage together! 3+ years later, still recovering!BrenYoda883 and 8thnote Thank this. -
Thanks everyone. .. quick update... Someone from safety and workmans comp called me... suggested I go get it looked at.. so I went to my Dr and it was billed to workmans comp... turns out I have a torn rotator cuff and hesuspects a pinched nerve in my lower neck, going for more testing tomorrow morning... so, looks like I may be off work for at least a couple weeks...
Yeah... I know better, and knowing I was coming in at a funcky angle I should of taken more care to be certain I was lined up good... I did a quick look and it looked looked ok.. figured it was close ennough to go in.. but it slid up un the fith wheel instead of going into it... and, of course in hindsight.. I could of been more careful when I was cranking the landing... but, I was annoyed and just went at it... I could of waited for the yard guys to show and let the lift it with the front loaders... and let the air out... tough learning lesson...
The whole man up and just work through it.. was really bad advice... I certainly could of and more than likely would of only made the injury worse... just about everything about flatbedding involves the rotator cuff..
The funny thing is... my call to dispatch was the saving grace... and I wasnt calling to tell them I hurt myself, but to explain what was taking me so long... but, once I said I hurt my shoulder he put me through to safety who told me to take the rest of the day off... then the call later to have me go get it checked out...
So far I am pleased with how it is going and being handled... but, we all know these things can go south quickly.. I will keep you posted.. -
But yea, he's right, if it hurt that much and isnt getting better with ice, then a doc may be in order.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -

Get your arm looked at by a doctor. Most importantly I hope you learned to get out and look!
