Out of State CDL Training & Test

    Hi all,

    Looking for some knowledge/experience on my scenario.

    I'm in California with a Califonia DL and CLP.

    I have my CLP (Commercial Learners Permit) issued on 2/4 just before the ELDP law went into effect on 2/7. I would like to go out of state for training and testing at a 3rd party testing facility.

    Does anybody know if this is possible and how the process works to have my CDL in California after completion? All I've seen or heard of is a DL170, but don't know the details.

    I want to understand the process and make sure this is possible and lawful before I go spend thousands on a school and test.

    It can be done but it’s a PITA - I hope your garage is full of Astroglide.

    1. ‘Move’ to another state. My cdl school in CO had us sign 3 week lease agreements for our housing at the school as proof of CO residency.

    2. Train and test in Iowa (or wherever). When you pass your road test and take the evaluator’s slip to the DMV you will be issued a temporary paper cdl that expires in 30 to 90 days (varies by state).

    3. If you lived in the United States you would merely pay a nominal fee and exchange your temporary paper cdl for a cdl in your state. Since you choose to live in Mexico’s Gay District you must RE-TEST EVERYTHING - including the written test for your class c license and pay many more fees.
