Your experience was a very rare one then. I worked in a dealership, and C-15's in 08' newer trucks were always in the shop, and they were so bad we wouldn't take them on trade. I'm running a 13' mack mp8 (volvo engine), I've idled a few times at night and do a lot of local delivery and regional work with it. Not one regen yet (I know it's coming). The main problem with the CATS was the ARD head, it was a nightmare. Yes DEF helps, and the systems have slimmed down on new trucks to a single unit. 60k on my new truck and no issues so far. I think a regen after 2600 miles on the new truck is a bit soon, as others have stated do not idle the truck if you don't have to.
The Maxforce though I think is by far the worst emissions engine out there.
